DIY Stunning Faux Stone Wall Decor For A Unique Textured Look
Natural stone can be an amazing way to bring nature into your home, whether it's with elements like fireplace mantels and furniture pieces, or smaller items like lamps and pottery. While the walls can be an especially perfect place to add stone accents, real stone pieces can be very expensive, as well as heavy and hard to hang on plaster or drywall walls. TikTok's Kendra Nicole, however, shows off an amazing DIY project that creates lovely but completely fake stone wall pieces using ordinary styrofoam, textured spray paint, chalk paint, and adhesive. The result is a stunning wall hanging that looks real, adding great texture and depth to any empty walls.
This project is absolutely perfect for spaces rooted in biophilic interior décor or bohemian style. You can vary the size and cost of the faux stone to adapt it to the space you are outfitting. And you can even customize the color scheme of the faux stone to fit your décor.
Creating a faux stone installation for your wall
To create your faux stone wall installation, grab a large sheet of thick styrofoam board. Using a foam cutter, like this one from Amazon, cut your sheet into pieces using organic and asymmetrical shapes often found in natural stone. Create an assortment of smaller and larger pieces that you will assemble for your finished installation. Once you have cut the stone, use a foam brush to coat the styrofoam in your desired shade of chalk paint (the DIYer uses two different colors, brown and gray, but you can use a single shade or many, as well as mix lighter and darker blends to create shadow and definition). Coat the foam board entirely with the chalk paint, making sure to get into all the uneven crevices and cracks on the sides. When dry, add textured spray paint over the entirety of the foam, which will give your pieces the visual texture of real stone.
After they have dried completely, attach the pieces using wood glue or a similar adhesive at the places where they overlap. This lightweight hanging can then be moved where you want to hang it once the adhesive has dried. Add small hooks on the back or use screws to secure it to the wall securely.
Customizing your rock wall
Customize your wall installation by adding other natural elements around the stones, including garlands of greenery or moss to create a fun accent wall idea. For additional interest, combine the stone with some adorable DIY faux mushrooms to add whimsy to your walls. To turn your faux stone wall into a statement piece, consider adding some twinkle lights amidst the greenery for a cozy glow at night. While this project makes individual stones for the wall, you can use a similar paint technique to make a continuous faux stone wall using a sheet of foam cut with narrow grooves that reflect the contours of stone.
This fun and naturalistic installation wall would be beautiful in an entryway since it doesn't take up a lot of space and makes a nice transition between the indoors and outdoors. Other great spots include the bathroom, where it gives the room a woodland spa-like feel, or as a whimsical accent wall in kids or teens room.
