DIY A Coastal-Chic Toilet Paper Holder For Beachy Bathroom Vibes

Amalficore, the trendy way to bring a summer coastal look into your home, was popular throughout 2024, and there's no reason to suggest the style is dying out anytime soon. After all, who doesn't love those easy, breezy vibes? The coastal aesthetic is enduringly popular in the bathroom — something that's perhaps unsurprising given all the water in there.

However, the fixture that dispenses your toilet paper is often overlooked in design. So why not remedy this injustice with an easy craft even the most DIY-challenged homeowner can tackle? Create a beachy toilet paper holder by affixing two twine loops to either end of a short, thick piece of rope and looping it over a double hook attached to a decorated wooden board mounted to your bathroom wall.

Dollar Tree has Crafter's Square Natural Jute Cord, Tool Bench Hardware White Masking Tape, and Crafter's Square MDF Wood Plank Boards. Walmart sells red double pronged hooks, eight for just over $12, that give old lighthouse vibes. Shortcut your way to appropriately coastal paint colors with this DecoArt DecoEARTH "Ocean Blue" acrylic paint set, also at Walmart for about $20. To decorate your holder, upcycle your own oceanic photograph or art print, or shop your local antique store for vintage seaside postcards. One of the most important things to look for in the perfect toilet roll holder is how easily the roll, well, rolls; the rope holding the roll shouldn't inhibit rotation.

Craft a toilet roll holder that brings the seaside into your bathroom

Tools-wise, gather scissors, a hot glue gun and sticks, screws (or super glue, if you prefer), and paintbrushes in a few sizes. Cut two short matching lengths of twine and loop them over the ends of the thick rope that will form your roll holder. Secure with masking tape and wrap with the white string, applying hot glue as you work. Tuck the loose end back into the coil. Set the rope aside and move onto decorating the wooden board. Tear or haphazardly cut the straight edges from the postcard or photograph you're using, cover it in varnish, and, once dry, rub the back of the sheet to roughen it up and improve adhesion.

Paint the board and the back of your image with light hued acrylic paint — think classic shiplap colors and textures. Stick the image to the board and use a credit card to gently smooth out any wrinkles. This is where things get artsy; you need to extend the colors and lines of the image out onto the board with paint. If you're not a dab hand at painting, try stenciling. You can get all kinds of nautically themed stencils online; paint over them with acrylic craft paint per the manufacturer's instructions.

This toilet paper roll holder DIY numbers among the creative ways to use decoupage in your home. However, you can buy an already decorated board to save time. Once the paint is dry to the touch, varnish the entire board. Glue or screw on the double hook near the top of the board, mount the holder to your bathroom wall, and hang the roll of toilet paper.
