How To Keep Plants In The Bathroom Without Cluttering Countertops

Plants in your bathroom create a natural, inviting vibe. Plus, they soak up extra moisture in the air, which can reduce the chance of mold growth in a room known for high humidity. The problem with growing a container garden in your bathroom is often space. Countertops are at a premium in bathrooms, so you don't want to give up space for plants. If your sink isn't close to the window, plants sitting on your counter might not get enough sunlight to grow well. If you want to clear clutter from bathroom counters, give your bathroom plants a dedicated home in the window, where they stay out of your way while absorbing all the sunlight they need.

If you have a wide window sill, you can position small pots along it. Window sill extenders give you additional space for larger plants. Another option is installing shelves across the window. Recessed windows with drywall window returns make shelf installation easy. You can attach the brackets by drilling into the drywall on the sides of the window and screw the shelves onto the brackets.

Customizing the shelves to fit your bathroom space, preferences, and plants helps you make the most of the project. You can build custom shelves or add premade shelving to your bathroom windows. For plants that need varying amounts of light, buy or DIY a unique, rotating floating shelf that lets you swivel the shelves in and out of the sunlight.

Make the most of your bathroom window plant shelves

When choosing shelves, consider window accessibility. For fire safety, avoid decorations, including shelves, that slow or prevent you from opening the window. With swiveling shelves, you can move plants out of your way, whether you need to use the window as an escape or simply want fresh air. Another easily removable option is a hanging rope shelf, which hangs on a heavy-duty hook at the top of the window. If you need to remove the shelf, pull the rope off of the hook and set the shelf aside.

Suction cup plant shelves stick to the glass to hold a few lightweight plants, and you can pull the shelf off quickly when needed. Or install a regular shelf near the top of the window. You maintain your view and have plenty of space to access the window below the shelf.

While the window shelf helps with growing healthy houseplants in your bathroom, the shelves don't have to be reserved for plants. Add other decor items among the greenery to add to your design theme. You can also use the shelves for extra storage, but be careful of what you put on the shelf. Storing prescription or over-the-counter medications in direct sunlight or high temperatures may affect the efficacy of the drugs. Decorative perfume bottles might look pretty displayed among your plants, but sunlight can decrease the strength of the fragrance. Choose decorative items that aren't affected by sunlight to accent your plants.
