What Everyone Gets Wrong About Minimalist Interior Design And Decor

Following decor trends is a great way to see what's in style and get inspiration for your own home. Some popular design trends are even meant to increase your home's real estate value. However, it's hard to keep track of these design ideas and what they actually mean for your living space. House Digest spoke exclusively with Erika Dale, interior designer and founder of Erika Dale Interior Design, to learn more about minimalist interior design and decor and what everyone seems to get wrong about this design style.

"When people hear the word 'minimalism,' they typically think of a stark interior with a completely light neutral color palette," Dale explained. "However, minimalist design is the focus on simplicity, intentionality, and functionality with the use of clean lines and pared down decor to showcase what is important." This can help you decide if it's the right decision for your home.

Minimalist doesn't mean neutral

Despite what you may initially think, minimalist design can be far from dull and boring. In fact, many people who use the minimalist decor trend have lots of colors and textures within their home. During House Digest's exclusive interview with Erika Dale, she discussed how to make your home still feel lively while following this design trend.

"To avoid that sterile, empty feeling, successful minimalist interiors are packed with texture and streamlined visual interest in the form of very intentional selection of decoration," Dale said. "Also, do not be afraid to use some color and contrast — simplicity of form and aesthetic is not mutually exclusive with restrictive light neutral color palettes."

Rather than having a large quantity of decor items, minimalist design is more about the quality and value of the items to you. Find items that work for multiple purposes — like this coffee table that offers some surprises and is perfect for small spaces — which can help keep your space looking simplistic without losing functionality.

What are the rules of minimalist decor?

Most home decor trends have a set of "rules" that help distinguish the trend from another design style. For minimalist design, this can include valuing simplicity in the quantity of items and in color choices, using multifunctional items, embracing natural light, and including negative space. When House Digest spoke exclusively with Erika Dale, she shared her thoughts on these standards.

"I absolutely agree with all of these 'rules' of minimalism, as the aesthetic looks its best with no clutter, selective decor that is personally valuable, and a tranquil balance of negative space for the eye to rest," Dale said. "I do think, however, that using a simple color palette can mean more than just neutrals." This means that embracing the minimalist style doesn't mean your home must be filled with shades of brown, grey, and white. Consider how other paint colors can create a peaceful environment while still following the minimalist design trend.
