Give Old Vases A Fun Disco Vibe With An Easy And Affordable DIY

They tried to kill disco, but the faceted balls of that period are a trend that will never die. While stringing one up from your ceiling might not mesh with your post-college decor theme, you can bring a bit of the glittering funkiness into your home for only a few dollars with a gorgeous disco vase. Glow-up a thrift store vase or an old one sitting around your home with mirrored tiles, rhinestones, and glittery trim. Further, elevate it on a candle pillar, and you won't miss the shining vase hanging in your living room. You can bring back the '70s home decor with a full-on disco ball vase, or you can bejewel an old vase with a varied collection of faux crystals, like YouTuber Eve Aedifacio did with her upcycle of second-hand ceramic and glass containers.

If you want to decorate with a '70s aesthetic in your home, nab an old vase in need of a face lift (preferably one with smooth, rounded sides), purchase some silver mirrored stickers like these PP OPOUNT self-adhesive mosaic tiles, and get a can of gold or silver metallic spray paint. You can also boost your project's height — and appeal — with a Stoneware Pillar Candle Pedestal from Dollar Tree. Whether your final product closely resembles a mirror ball or looks worthy of a spot in a fairy princess' castle, this fun craft will add equal parts glamor and whimsy to any room.

Have a ball

First, give your vase — and your candle pedestal, if you're using one — a few coats of silver spray paint. Don't forget to paint the vase's underside if it'll be on a pedestal, since the bottom will be visible. Once it dries, apply a generous amount of heavy-duty craft glue to the top of the candle pedestal and attach it to the base of your vase.

If your vase has straight sides, apply the mirrored stickers in strips over its exterior. For vases with curved or irregular-shaped sides, you may find that cutting each row of mirrored stickers into individual tiles before adhering them is easier. Aim to cover the entire exterior of the vase with the disco tiles, but keep in mind that the silver paint beneath the stickers will help hide any flaws. Finally, give your vase a finished look by gluing decorative trim, like this MAYJOYDIY Silver Braid Trim around the edge of the vase's mouth. If you've opted for a pedestal, balance the look by adding trim around the base of the pillar, as well. Now you have a gorgeous disco vase that you can style anywhere in your home.

Bring the bling

Did your Goodwill hunting trip present you with a funky contoured or textured vase? Go with it! You just may end up with a creation that makes your home feel like Versailles. Our YouTuber, Eva Aedifacio, started with a few vases: one resembling a sea urchin, another glass pumpkin candy dish with a lid, and a geometric vase dotted with rows of divots around its circumference. These distinctive contours and embellishments lent themselves perfectly to glittery disco enhancements.

The vertical lines of the urchin- and pumpkin-shaped vessels became part of the upgrade. Aedifacio made the most of those features by gluing jeweled and/or glittery trim along the grooves. The geometric vase's divots were also the perfect size to hold each rhinestone. Plus, the glitzy trim glued along the unfinished edges accented the faux crystals on these vases, fit for a rococo palace. Similarly, you can mimic the chic design with the disco tiles on your contoured or textured vase.

Further, contrasting metallics can give your project some depth. Aedifacio's gold-painted urchin vase popped when overlaid with silver jeweled trim. Follow suit with gold as a base paint trimmed in silver, or invert the colors for a cooler look. Pair a gold-painted vase with a silver pedestal or vice versa for extra visual appeal. You'll embrace a dynamic look and fun disco vibes.
