The Cutest DIY Christmas Tree Garland Just Calls For Some Yarn And Creativity

Store-bought Christmas decorations may be convenient and beautiful, but there's just something about homemade ones that have you remaking them year after year. While there are many creative Christmas decorations you can make with household items like aluminum foil and paper rolls, there's something extra nostalgic about using yarn. Not only does wool evoke fuzzy feelings and feel-good vibe, but adding this element to your holiday theme will lend a charming touch to your decor while saving you a pretty penny. Our Christmas tree garland is easy to make and could also act as a fun holiday craft to enjoy with family and friends.

We took some inspiration from Instagram user Ara Lindes for this clever DIY. You probably already have the essentials on hand to make the Christmas tree garland, but it won't be hard to source the items either. You will need yarn, a piece of cardboard, a pair of sharp scissors, tiny elastics, glue, an assortment of cotton balls or beads to decorate your miniature tree with, and some string to hang your woolen ornaments from. It's even possible to adorn a string of lights with these tree-like pompoms. As with most DIY decorations, allow your imagination free reign to create some one-of-a-kind pieces. Kids would love the chance to help with this easy project, and they can decorate the trees to their hearts' content.

Assembling the branches of the yarn tree

Trees don't need bark to be magical. While the standard Douglas fir may be a classic, you may also repurpose a tomato cage into the cutest budget-friendly Christmas tree, or try out this DIY and spruce up your home with many tiny yarn trees floating above your living space. The first step is to cut 1, 1 1/2, and 2-inch wide strips of cardboard. Just like a conifer has smaller branches at the top that get bigger towards the bottom of the trunk, you'll want to create the same illusion with your decor. Wrap your chosen yarn around the smallest piece of cardboard. Pinch the top end of the yarn (where it folds over the cardboard) to form a ball, and attach a small elastic or piece of string to secure it. Now, cut the yarn at the other end of the cardboard. Carefully remove the cardboard piece from the yarn, holding the ball you formed at the top. You have created the uppermost tassel. Repeat the same process with the medium and large pieces of cardboard to make the additional layers.

Attach the three tassels into each other with the smallest at the top, and add a bit of hot glue between each layer for security. After the glue dries, attach your decorations to each tree. Finally, string the holiday ornaments onto a garland so you can easily hang it on your tree or mantel.

Make your very own tassel tree with some dowels

Do you need to spend a lot of money on a Christmas tree? If you make these cute miniature tree decorations, the answer is no. While they're certainly not going to be as large as a real tree, these cozy decorations can give you that added touch of cheer you need, especially if you're living in a small space and don't have much room for seasonal decor. If you're not too keen on the idea of turning them into a garland, you could also use your mini tassel trees as ornaments or present decorations. Keep them all one color for a classic, cohesive look, or mix and match different kinds of yarn to bring in some variety.

Another attention-grabbing idea is to turn your tassel decoration into a self-standing tree. You will need some yarn trees that you previously assembled (make them a little larger to make a statement), a drill, wood slices, wooden dowels, and some glue.  Putting the decoration together is fairly simple, too. Just pre-drill a hole through the center of a wood slice and attach your tassel tree to a dowel. Now, apply some glue on the other side of the dowel and carefully place it into the hole you created. If your tree isn't already decorated, you should wait until it is completely dry. After it's assembled, you can dress it up with cute ornaments, ribbons, and embellishments.
