This Stunning DIY Gem Nightlight Is The Chic Addition Your Bedroom Deserves
As a society, are we finally ready to get rid of the stigma against using nightlights as an adult? While the topic of needing a nightlight was fodder for bullying in childhood, the use of a simple plug-in light in your bedroom is actually practical for a lot of reasons. From helping to guide a path to the bathroom or offering respite from total darkness, nightlights are typically a low-energy way to illuminate areas of your home in the dark hours. They can also function as holiday decorations or other home decor. With this simple hack, you can make an attractive nightlight that won't ruin your home's aesthetic. You'll attach a flat gemstone to the front of a nightlight to create a customized piece for your bedroom.
The obvious first step is to find a simple nightlight base at an affordable store like the Dollar Tree. You should opt for something that plugs directly into the wall and comes with a light bulb to save time and money. It should also have a plastic shade over the bulb so a gem can easily be added to it. A Sunbeam Manual LED Night Light from Dollar Tree is a great option (and only $1.25, of course). Amazon also offers the four-pack of Emotionlite Plug in Night Lights for $11.
Creating this nightlight
YouTube user Meg Allan Cole created a gem nightlight by first finding an agate slice, which she says can be purchased from a gem store or online. Amazon sells packs like the Hicarer Agate Slices ($16 for 16 pieces), so you can stock up for future projects or make a few nightlights at the same time. Choose the gem that's best for you, and don't worry too much about it being transparent enough to let through light, as the beams of light can bounce off the wall. If you don't like the look of an agate slice, you could also buy a few tall crystals — check out the best crystals for your bedroom — and use strong glue to fasten them together. Just try to ensure that they hide the full light cover to get a chic, complete look.
Once you have the nightlight base and crystal picked out, use a non-flammable glue to fasten the crystal to the light. E6000 Craft Adhesive Glue ($10 on Amazon) is a great option for this project (it's non-flammable once cured), or anything else that won't catch fire and will thoroughly hold the pieces together. Adhere the crystal in a space with air flow to avoid inhaling glue fumes, and let it dry on a flat surface so that it doesn't shift around in the drying process. Once dried completely, you can place the nightlight anywhere you want and enjoy the bright pop of color at all times.
