Why Winter Is The Best Season To Replace Your Kitchen Countertops

When gardening, there are ideal periods to grow certain plants and times when it's best to prune them back. Are there also preferred times to do other home projects? Is there a best time of the year to start a kitchen remodel? House Digest spoke exclusively with Irakli Khizanishvili, CEO and owner of Proslit Tile & Stone, to learn why winter is the best season to replace your kitchen countertops.

"While there is some truth to the idea that winter can be an opportune time for this project, the 'best; time really depends on the homeowner's needs and schedule," Khizanishvili said. Because fewer home renovations occur during the winter, there may be more availability when it comes to hiring professionals. Khizanishvili also noted that there can occasionally be better prices. If you are sensitive to certain allergens, winter is an ideal time for this renovation project since they're less prevalent in colder weather.

As Khizanishvili shared, replacing your countertops during the winter also prepares you for hosting, which usually becomes more commonplace in the spring and summer. Once the project is completed, you'll have more time to plan for any other renovations you have planned from the following year. All in all, there are plenty of benefits to tackling this task amid the snowy season.

There are some downsides

While installing your countertops in the winter can come with many advantages, there are also a few downsides. In House Digest's exclusive talk with Irakli Khizanishvili, he explained some of them. "A potential downside is the impact of cold weather on certain materials and adhesives," he shared. "For example, stone countertops like quartz or granite need to be carefully acclimated to indoor temperatures before installation to avoid cracking or other issues. Additionally, weather conditions could occasionally delay deliveries or installation schedules, particularly in regions with heavy snow or ice."

If you do decide to install your countertops this winter, start planning your new design in the fall. There are 15 types of countertops you should know before your kitchen remodel, so be sure to familiarize yourself with each material. With this understanding, you will be able to make a more informed decision about what's practical for your living space.

Spring and early fall are also good times to replace your kitchen countertops

While winter can be a great time to replace your kitchen countertops, you do have options — there are other parts of the year that also work well. According to Irakli Khizanishvili, spring and early fall can also be ideal times to dive into a remodel. "These seasons often bring milder weather, fewer risks of travel or shipping delays, and align well with homeowners' broader renovation timelines," he explained in his exclusive interview with House Digest. "Spring is particularly advantageous if homeowners are upgrading their outdoor spaces simultaneously, creating a cohesive plan for indoor-outdoor entertaining."

At the end of the day, your best bet is to choose the season that will work well for you and your family's schedules. What works for some people may not be ideal for you. Take time to plan your ideal space and be sure to follow these rules when designing a new kitchen.
