Reuse Old Socks To Make The Cutest Christmas Home Decor On A Budget
There are plenty of creative Christmas decorations you can make with household items that will add pops of festivity to your home without costing an arm and a leg. Whether you're upcycling Dollar Tree items or finding one of the million ways to use Mason jars for decor, it's great to be resourceful with your Christmas garb. This will help both the environment and your bank account all while creating a home that feels uniquely "you." In this new hack, you can put yet another household item to good use. Discover how to create a cute snowman out of old socks.
In order to keep this hack eco-friendly, it's best to use socks that you already have instead of buying brand new ones. Consider using those single socks whose match got swallowed by the washing machine (yes, that's a real thing – washing machines really can make socks disappear when they get stuck inside). Try to find longer white socks and complement them with any colorful single socks of any size. The second sock will be used to make the snowman's hat and scarf, so you have plenty of creative liberty. Fuzzy types will add texture and interest, so they may be the best option. If you don't have any extra socks, you can always find them at your nearest dollar store. Either way, you'll still be creating some Christmas decor on a budget.
How to make your sock snowman
Making this adorable DIY snowman decor is pretty simple. The first step is to fill the sock with rice, dried beans, beads, cotton balls, or any other stuffing you have around the house. Instagram creator @ga_beach_restorations used rice and wrapped the sock around a large cup full of rice in order to easily pour it in. However, if you want to save your snowman for future holiday seasons, you should use a stuffing variety that won't attract bugs. Tie the top closed with a rubber band, then use two zip ties or pieces of string to separate the sock into three sections, creating the snowman's body. White zip ties will blend in the best.
Once your base is set, you can use hot glue to attach some black sewing buttons or small pom poms in any color for the three buttons down the middle. Small beads, rocks, or other round tiny items can be used for the two eyes and smile. An orange pipe cleaner would be perfect for the carrot nose, though a triangle piece of cardboard painted orange would also work. Then, cut pieces of your other sock — preferably a colorful one — and use them for a top hat and scarf, using the toe section of the sock for the hat. Glue those pieces to the snowman as well, and you've got all of the basics down. Add your own personal flares, like cinnamon sticks for arms or a base to help your snowman stand up. Finally, place your finished snowman anywhere in the house.
