Transform Boring Builder-Grade Walls Into A Fabulous Space With A Fun DIY

Blank walls, especially in newer builds, can often be a little uninspiring. Usually plain plaster or drywall, they typically lack the architectural interest and texture you can find in many older homes with more character. This means homeowners usually try to cover up blank walls in conventional ways like using wallpaper, paint, or adding large scale artwork. There may, however, be a far more interesting way to build character on a builder grade wall that creates an amazing focal point that instantly grants the walls the character and interest they lack. TikTok user @deannatdunn shows how to create a stunning accent wall using plywood, string lights, and paint for a mod organic-shaped blob wall that is innovative and creative. It also provides indirect lighting that makes any room feel cozier.

Use this cool wall as a way to highlight and create a focal point in a room that lacks one. @deannatdunn adds the feature on a blank area that is accented by a beautiful handmade DIY console she created from scratch with stylish zellige tiles that catch and reflect the light charmingly. This wall would look great behind an entertainment wall, above a bed, or behind a sofa too. It would also be perfect for adding depth in a small space like a stairwell or foyer that lacks interest on the walls.

Creating a lit accent wall

To create this stunning accent wall to liven up your home, you will need several sheets of plywood large enough to cover the wall area you are working with. Lay them out against the wall and trace out the shape of your recess. You can go for a standard circle, arch, oval, or rectangle shape in more traditional spaces or create a more asymmetrical organic shape of your choosing for modern and boho rooms. Cut out your marked design with a jigsaw, then use hot glue to glue a string of row lights behind at the edge. Attach the panels to the wall with screws into the studs, closing up any gaps with wood filler between pieces for a seamless finish.

The TikToker paints her wall with a mottled lime wash finish on the wood blending several colors, but you can also use sponge or rag painting techniques to create a similar texture. You could also leave the plywood unpainted and add a poly coat or your favorite stain for a more natural design look.
