Save Empty Yogurt Jars To DIY Adorable Decorative Christmas Bells

If you are a big yogurt lover, particularly of the brands that package theirs in small glass jars like Oui or La Fermière, you may want to think twice before tossing your empty vessels in the garbage. There's actually a clever way to reuse these old glass jars around the house. Since the yogurt pots have a slightly curved shape, when you turn them upside down, they have a silhouette very similar to a bell. And by painting them and stringing them together with pretty ribbon or twine, they are easy to transform into beautiful Christmas bells that you can use for festive holiday decor. They'd make a particularly lovely accent for your mantel or staircase garland, or would pair beautifully with a wreath!

This is an incredibly easy DIY project to pull off and a great way to repurpose things you already have around the house. Not only will this save you money (and who doesn't love saving money around the holidays?), but you can also completely customize the look of your bells to match your personal holiday decor. Plus, it's a fun and creative activity that you can do while listening to Christmas music or watching holiday films to really get yourself into the spirit of the season. If you're ready to get started, we're breaking down the basic construction details below as well as offering some creative ways you can customize your bells to add a touch of holiday magic to your home.

Repurposing yogurt jars into festive bells

To make your bells, you first need to remove the labels from your jars. If you encounter any stubborn stickers, try this brilliant hack that'll remove stickers from glass items. Ideally, you want to save at least three jars to create a cluster of bells, but you can use more than three. Want to make this and don't eat yogurt? These Mason Life Yogurt Jars will work, too. Now turn your jars upside down and use super glue like E6000 to attach a small lamp coupling to the center of each jar. Allow the glue to dry completely — these couplings are what you'll use to hang your bells. Once dry, your bells are now ready to be painted and personalized.

For a classic look, spray paint the bells with a gold or silver metallic paint. Or give them a pop of color by painting them in a bright hue like red. If you'd like to add an antique vibe, paint the bells with black paint and then coat them unevenly with gold Rub 'n Buff. Want to create extra sparkle? Brush glue onto the entire surface and then coat them with glitter. Another fun idea is to decoupage family photos onto the bells or stencil a monogram on them. Once you're done painting the bells, string varying lengths of either ribbon or twine through the couplings and tie the bells into a cluster. Top them with a pretty bow, mistletoe or berries, and hang!
