DIY Rustic Decoupage Wall Decor Using An Old Window
Upcycling antique windows has become something of a trend in home decor, from Joanna Gaines' church-style frame turned bedroom headboard on "Fixer Uppers," to DIY picture holders on social media. There's just something about transforming what was once a portal to the outside world into a stunning accent piece inside your house. There are many beautiful ways to repurpose an old window into home decor, but one of the most fun is decoupage.
This glue-based art form involves cutting out shapes in different colors or patterns and applying them to a base. It's a little like wallpapering without the wall. For TikTokers, Jillscreations and Roycycled, this craft seemed like the perfect opportunity to team up and beautify outdated glass panes. Jill used Mod Podge glue, a brush, and Roy's brand of printed craft paper to breathe new life into an antique. The finished project gives edgy meets old-world vibes. Who knew you could turn your furniture into a DIY piece of art with decoupaging? Check out how to make your own with some easily obtained materials.
Transforming your old window into art
To begin this project, you first need to gather some materials. Start with an old window you no longer want or one you've thrifted. Purchase some Mod Podge Glue and a decoupage brush, such as the Mod Podge Paint Brush Applicator, and your choice of paper. Any tissue or craft type will work, but you can also buy products specifically designed for this type of gluing task. Once you have the supplies assembled, it's time to get your craft on.
To start, clean the window for an even application. Next, apply the glue to one area of glass at a time and plaster on the paper overtop. Make sure to place the pattern or image face down on the back of the pane so it shows through the front side you want to display on your wall. Continue the process until you've covered all transparent areas. Let it dry and mount it. This is certainly one of the most creative ways to use decoupage in your home. You can further customize your project by painting the frame, cutting colored paper into smaller pieces to create a stained-glass look, or by adding embellishments like sequins, glitter, beads, and other ornaments. However you personalize this piece, it's sure to make a statement, and give you a whole new view through the window.
