Maximize Your Tiny Bathroom Space With An In-Floor Storage Solution

Cramped quarters can be a pain, especially when it comes to your bathroom storage. Whether it's putting away towels or toilet paper rolls, an in-floor storage compartment is a solution that can help you maximize your tiny powder room space. This type of storage not only offers more space for necessary items but also keeps them tucked away in your small bathroom to prevent clutter.

In-floor storage is built into your floorboards, but planning it out before you grab your saw is essential. This type of project works on different types of bathroom flooring such as wood and tile and is a great way to add another nook to keep items like extra toiletries, cleaning supplies, or other essentials you don't want in the way. Building an in-floor storage space requires materials like screws, fabric, plywood to build a box or a plastic container, and anything else you might need to personalize the project to your liking. You'll also need items like a keyhole saw, screwdriver, measuring tape, and an electric drill.

How to build in-floor storage

To start building in-floor storage, first plan where to place your compartment. To find the right spot, consider where the floor joists are located, the lines of the floor you are cutting, and the depth or amount of space you want to create. From there, draw an outline and use a saw to cut through until you reveal the floor joists beneath. Then, measure the space between the floor joists and add a plastic bin or wooden storage box to the space. If making a wooden box with plywood, consider stapling fabric to the wood to make the inside of the box more aesthetic. Once your container is complete, you can place it in your floor space and drill screws into the subfloor to keep your box stable.

With a secure box screwed into the floor, it's time to create the in-floor storage lid. To ensure your lid can be placed on top of the storage space seamlessly, consider adding an aluminum frame to the perimeter of your storage to join your floorboards with the box and give the lid something to rest on. Finally, using the material of your floor, cut it to line up with your hole space to create the top of your box and install hinges and a small handle so you can easily access your new storage unit.
