Get All The Tasty & Toasty Vibes With A Fun Holiday Pool Noodle DIY

Whether you're a pumpkin spice latte person or you drink peppermint mochas all year long, you can make the cutest mug decoration with just a few leftover items that are probably starting to collect dust in your garage. Lots of creators on both Instagram and TikTok are sharing their versions of giant hot chocolate cup or coffee mug holiday decorations. To create a giant mug for yourself, you'll attach a pool noodle handle to a planter, spray paint the piece, and add any embellishments you desire. This could be placed near your front door on your covered porch or used as an interior decoration.

Before you get started, ensure that you have a quality hot glue gun, as that's key to keeping the project together. A crafter's best friend, a glue gun is also the key to easily hanging your garlands outside and other festive pool noodle hacks, so investing in one is sure to make decorating easier. You could also potentially borrow one from a friend to save money.

You'll also need some other supplies to complete this festive DIY, including a couple pool noodles and a large plastic planter that measures at least 20 inches in diameter. The project also calls for a cardboard box, spray paint, and painter's tape. To cut through the foam materials, also ensure you have a sharp utility knife on hand. You could also use a serrated knife or scissors instead.

How to DIY this adorable decoration

Start by covering your planter in Krylon Red Pepper Fusion Spray Paint. You can use any color you desire, but red or green would obviously be the most festive options. Then, cut a pool noodle to create a handle for your mug. The length will vary depending on the size of your planter. Use hot glue to securely attach both ends to one side of your painted planter. Once dry, paint the handle the same color as the planter.

Next, cut a circle out of a cardboard box that snugly fits inside the lip of your plastic planter. This is supposed to look like the surface of your hot chocolate or other toasty drink, so add some additional wow factor by painting the cardboard with Rust-Oleum Metallic Spray Paint in Dark Copper or Antique Brass. No cozy cuppa is complete without some marshmallows. Make as many as you want by cutting up a pool noodle and spray painting the pieces white, then adding white paper on the ends to cover the holes. Spray foam could also look like whipped cream.

Finally, you'll need to create a straw. Cut a length of pool noodle that's about the same height as your planter. To create a candy cane stripe effect, paint the pool noodle white. Let it dry thoroughly before spiraling painters tape around the pool noodle and painting it red. Remove the tape before gluing the straw to your new mug decoration that will add a touch of holiday magic to your home. If desired, add additional embellishments around the marshmallows like ornaments or a snowflake decoration onto the mug.
