A Bunch Of Old Jars Will Transform The Way You Organize Tools

If you're looking for budget-friendly ways to keep your garage organized, especially those tiny screws, nails, and bolts, try this DIY from TikTok user @dadadvicefrombo. By attaching jars you likely already have to the underside of your garage shelf, you can organize small tools so they're always easy to find. All you need are clean glass or plastic jars with lids, screws, a hammer, drill, and a pencil.

If you're using mason jars with tops that separate into a circular rim and a flat lid, glue those together first and let dry. Measure the underside of your space and divide by the number of jars you have to determine how far apart to space them. Mark each jar's spot with a pencil. Drill holes for each screw at each marked spot. Then, place the lids upside down so the inside is facing toward you on a workbench or other hard surface. Position a screw in the middle of the lid and lightly hit it with the hammer to make a small dent. This makes it easier to screw through. Then, position the lid over the drilled holes, place a screw over the lid's dent, and screw it into place. For more security, screw up to two additional screws into the lid to support the main one. Repeat with all lids. Then, just fill your jars and attach to the lids.

Tips to make this DIY a success

While this is a great way to repurpose glass jars from around your home, there's a few key tips to keep in mind. First, make sure the jars are evenly screwed into their lids when you replace them. A misaligned jar doesn't have the same support as one that's properly screwed in and could fall and break. If you're concerned about potential broken glass, use plastic jars instead. Also, be mindful of the thickness of each jar as well as the weight each jar will hold (thicker jars can typically hold more weight than thin ones). If you need to store heavier items, like small screwdrivers or heavy nuts and bolts, consider adding a washer around the screw when attaching the lid to the shelf.

The great part about this project is it can be used in different areas of your home, from kitchen countertop storage to your bathroom, or even your home office. If you want your jars to match the decor in these rooms, consider spray painting the lids — or the jars too, depending on the look you want — before attaching them to the underside of cabinets or shelving.
