The Best Place To Plant And Grow Ornamental Cabbage In The Garden
Many gardeners love the idea of having their yards looking beautiful all year long, and one plant that can help add some color is the ornamental cabbage. If you are a novice gardener though, you may not know where to plant and how to grow this specific plant. Fortunately, we were able to get some expert advice. In an exclusive interview with House Digest, Tiffany Selvey, House Digest's Garden Editor and in-house Master Gardener, shared with us the key takeaways about growing ornamental cabbage.
As it turns out, growing this ornamental veggie during winter comes with some major benefits – including adding a dash of color to your outdoor space. Ornamental cabbage is also great for beginners, as it isn't too picky about its living conditions: "As the name implies, ornamental cabbage should be grown anywhere it can be seen!" Selvey shared. "This edible landscaping survives temperatures in the single digits and will even withstand some snow. In fact, they won't reach their full color potential until temperatures average around freezing."
When to grow ornamental cabbage in your garden
Because of their love for chilly weather, ornamental cabbage can be great for your fall and early winter garden, and is one of many plants that will bring color to your yard during drab winters. Even better, you most likely won't have to deal with the cabbage worms, cutworms, aphids, and slugs that typically munch on cabbage in warmer temps. As far as when to plant these beauties, do so when temperatures are consistently cool. Aim for a sunny location with well-draining soil.
When House Digest spoke exclusively with Selvey, she explained the color evolution of ornamental cabbage: "These lovely members of the brassica family start with green hues maturing to white and purplish pink, depending on the variety." This makes them great for adding color to your yard during the fall and early winter months. Try planting a couple different varieties of the ornamental cabbage to add different colors to your garden!
Including ornamental cabbages beyond the garden
In an exclusive interview with House Digest, Tiffany Selvey shared how ornamental cabbage doesn't have to just be planted in a flower bed: "You can grow ornamental cabbage in the ground, but they also make a gorgeous winter addition to planters combined with other cold-tolerant plants, like pansies." Planters can be great for adding some seasonal decor to your front porch. In addition to the plants, you can add other decorations like small signs or figurines to help spruce up the containers for different holidays.
If you are looking to add some new plants to your garden this season, consider the ornamental cabbage along with other flowers perfect for a vibrant winter garden, like Japanese camellia or Christmas rose. Before long, your garden will be the talk of the neighborhood!
