Get Your Dream Rattan Coffee Table On A Budget With A Clever IKEA DIY

It's no secret that savvy DIYers love IKEA. The store is rampant with affordable products that can be transformed into top-quality project pieces. Whether you're opting for better living room storage solutions with IKEA cabinets, new shelving opportunities with the brand's many options, or anything in between, the Swedish warehouse has just about every answer you're looking for. With this hack, the ever-coveted rattan style comes to life in a DIY coffee table that costs about $70 to make.

Rattan has become a staple of Mid-century modern and boho design because of its chic, natural look that goes with just about any color palette. Unfortunately, it's not a simple material to get ahold of, so those wanting to achieve a rattan aesthetic often need to splurge in order to make it happen. A typical rattan coffee table will run you between $200 and $500. So, instead of buying expensive versions of these tables, read on to learn how you can make your own from IKEA products, with ways to personalize your project even further.

How to make the IKEA rattan coffee table

Instagram user @_dream_interior5 ideated this DIY hack by identifying a simple rattan base. IKEA's KAPPELAND pendant lampshade, at about $50, is a piece that's intended to be paired with a light fixture but also happens to be the perfect shape for a coffee table base. The SNUDDA Lazy Susan design, which costs $18, acts as an ideal wooden table top that spins for convenience. As shown in the video above, you can attach the Lazy Susan to the lampshade's smaller side (where the light bulb would normally go) by using wood glue and a staple gun. The creator also noted that you can use Gorilla Tape in place of the staples if you don't have that tool handy.

The base of the table measures 18" wide at its largest part and is 12" tall, making it a perfect side table for a living room or even a nightstand for a bedroom. It might feel a bit small for a coffee table, though, as the average coffee table is between 16" and 18" tall. If your furniture is taller and you think the height of the lampshade will be too small for the room, you can opt for the taller KAPPELAND lampshade, which measures 17" tall, giving you an extra five inches of height.

How to make the table your own

After creating the simple coffee table, you can make it fit your space by personalizing it even more. That can look like adding candles, plants, and books or using other DIY hacks. For instance, you can give the Lazy Susan piece a chic upgrade by gluing an affordable placement, like one from this Natural Hand-Woven Set on Amazon, to the top of it. This can enhance the rattan aesthetic and make for a more unique texture. You could also use spray paint the entire table a different color, like black, white, or sage green. Because this hack uses a Lazy Susan as the tabletop, you can make use of the spinning feature by adding a circular snack tray, like PlasticPro's Round Serving Platter, as the original creator did at the end of the video.

If you want a twist on the original idea, there are plenty of options for making this hack your own. Primarily, if you're on the lookout for a larger table, you can use two of the KAPPELAND bases side by side and purchase a large, rectangular wood piece as the top of the table. Something like the ANFALLARE tabletop, which is about 55 inches long, could give you more of a coffee table feel.
