The Beautiful Upcycle Hack That Turns A Plastic Bottle Into A Decorative Vase

If you're looking for a way to add color, texture, and personality to your home without any major changes, vases are a great feature. Some of the earliest known pottery dates back as far as 16,500 years ago in Japan. While the rough style and uses have evolved over the years, we still fill our homes with a variety of these unique vessels. Buying stylish clay and porcelain pots gets expensive, though — especially if you're looking for something with artistic value. Fortunately, as with most decor, you can get a similar look on a budget with a little DIY know-how.

There are many ways to incorporate ceramic art in your home, and this project lets you become the artist. TikToker genevavanderzeil has a love of transforming recycled products with multi-joint compound. In one of her latest creations, she coated empty plastic bottles in plaster and upcycled them into decorative vases. Check out how to create these stylish masterpieces for yourself and make something old new again in the process.

Upcycling your bottles into artwork

Before you start this project, grab a box cutter, hot glue gun, glue sticks, and a tub of plaster, like U S Gypsum joint compound. With these items at the ready, you can gather your recyclable bottles and start crafting. Cut the bottles to create the shape you want and use hot glue to connect the pieces. Genevavanderzeil cuts the top section of one bottle off and flips it upside down to create the opening lip of her vase. Once you've made a shape you're happy with, slather the whole thing in compound and let it dry. Read your label for dry times. It's usually between a few hours and a full day. Finally, sand to your desired smoothness, and voila. You can then further customize your creation.

The beautiful thing about handcrafting your own decorative pottery is that you can give each piece a completely different look. Add handles with tape or modeling clay before coating the creation in plaster. Finish the piece by pressing dried flowers into the Gypsum before it dries, or painting it afterward. You can also coat the entire thing with Rub'nBuff, or a similar metallic finish, to give it a brass, copper, or gold look. Who knew pop bottles were another common household item you can turn into a beautiful decorative vase? Make as many as you like and transform every room into a gallery featuring your DIY skills.
