The Budget-Friendly Hack To Create A Wall Organizer With An Empty Plastic Container
Creating useful objects from materials that might otherwise end up in the trash can be extremely rewarding, especially if you use them to build clever storage options for anywhere in your home. With a few modifications and some cool customization, you can turn the most humble items into pretty and useful DIYs that make perfect additions to sustainable interior décor. YouTube DIY-er Anna Home recently showed how to turn an ordinary plastic jug container into a hanging wall storage caddy that can be used to hold all manner of smaller objects — including keys and snacks — with just a few easy modifications.
Plastic jugs are often some of the best household containers to recycle since they take a long time to break down in the environment once you throw them out. Plastic vessels that would work well for this project include juice gallons and cleaning product jugs. The project is particularly suited for a fun way to repurpose your empty laundry detergent bottles.
Creating a basket from a plastic jug
To create a storage container out of an ordinary jug, begin by cutting it in half with a box cutter or sharp knife. You can use the bottom portion with its wide cavity, or you can use the top portion with the handle. If you choose the latter, you will also need to add a small bit of sturdy cardboard for your items to rest on and not sink into the opening. Use a drill bit to create two holes in the sides and run a length of thin rope or twine through, knotting them at the top to create a hanging apparatus. In their video, Home adds a fun, floral cut-out design on the side with a pearl center as a finishing touch.
The Youtuber uses the top half of the jug and enlists the handle as a towel holder, adding a small screw-in hook through the lid for keys. This wall basket also works as a hanging storage idea to hold things like skincare products, toiletries, and hair tools in a bathroom. To hang it in the shower, just add a few more drainage holes in the bottom. Or, use the container to hold extra snacks or supplies in the kitchen. Put it by the door as a catch-all basket for keys, mail, and sunglasses.
