The DIY Neutral Fall Burlap Sign That's Perfect For Any Wall Or Door

Distinctive and beautiful fall décor usually starts appearing in the stores as early as midsummer, with many options for decking your home out in style. The best decorations, however, are those that are not only cost-friendly, but allow you to customize and express your creativity in a DIY style. YouTube DIYer Crafty Little Beach showed off a gorgeous project featuring Dollar Tree elements that can be completed for well under $10 using seasonal wooden signs, burlap, wooden beads, and a few other supplies. The result is a gorgeous textural and rich burlap sign perfect for rustic, farmhouse, or neutral-driven décor schemes, which you would pay much more for at home retailers. It can also be completely customized to your taste and fall home décor.

To customize the sign, you will need a wooden pumpkin sign, Mod Podge, wooden beads, jute twine, and some burlap (Dollar Tree doesn't currently have a wide enough option in stock, but you can procure it inexpensively from Michaels or Amazon.) You will also need hot glue, white glue, and additional accents like ribbon, other beads, and fall elements of your choice.

Creating a DIY burlap sign

Using the wooden pumpkin sign as your base, slather on a liberal layer of Mod Podge to adhere the burlap fabric to the wood securely, smoothing out any bubbles and wrinkles. Allow it to dry, and then trim away any extra at the edges. You can leave the stem free of fabric and decorate it as you wish. One option is to wrap twine around the stem with a few dabs of hot glue, but you could also paint it brown or green.

For the beads, use hot glue to secure the flat backs to the burlap around the border of the piece and along the ribbing lines of the pumpkin to add more texture and dimension. To finish off the creation and give additional texture and more of an organic feel, wrap burlap leaves, raffia, or other accents around the stem. Hang your new sign on your door to welcome guests, or incorporate it into your interior décor as a cute fall mantle idea.

Customizing your pumpkin sign

The burlap base provides endless options for customization, including a choice of background material. Crafting retailers like JoAnn's sell burlap in other color options to vary from the natural and liven up a neutral color scheme. Or you could use linen, rich velvet, or patterned autumnal fabric for a similar cottage, glam, or eclectic style sign. You could also hand-paint accents or stencil words on the burlap. For a luxe look, use embroidery floss to create a message or words on the burlap before you glue it down. You could also paint on a jack-o' lantern design for some Halloween flair.

Other great textures and accents include lace, cording, ricrac trim, and fall-hued ribbons. You could also decorate your pumpkin sign with objects like adorable vintage buttons, crystals, or thrifted vintage costume jewelry for a shabby chic look.
