Stop Tossing Mason Jar Lids And Turn Them Into Cheery Wall Decor Instead
If you have a love of canning, or just have a soft spot for mason jars, you likely have more canning lid rings than you know what to do with. While minor surface rust can be removed from old canning rings with vinegar, if the rings are more severely rusted or damaged, they likely aren't safe to use for canning anymore. That doesn't mean they need to go directly into the recycling though; instead, you can turn them into beautiful wall or fridge decor with just the addition of some scrap fabric.
If you don't have any old canning rings you need to use up, but you want to try out this cute DIY anyway, canning rings are easily available at your local thrift store or from a variety of online retailers, including Amazon ($9.99 for 24). This project, much like making decorative baskets, is also a great way to use up fabric scraps that have been taking up valuable space. If you want your decoration to be a fridge magnet instead of a wall hanging, be sure to have some magnets on hand that you can attach to it at the end, as well.
Creating canning ring wreaths
Begin by making sure all your canning rings are washed and clean. Then, cut your fabric into around 20 pieces that are about 2 inches wide by 12 inches long. Next, fold a piece of fabric in half around the ring of the mason jar and tightly double knot it. Repeat this with each piece of fabric. Once you've finished, the ring should be completely hidden by the fabric. You can then trim the fabric to make sure it is even, and you have a beautiful and tiny wreath decoration.
You don't have to stop there, though. If you have the flat lids that went with your mason jar rings, you can cover those in fabric too and, using your hot glue, attach them to your ring. This can be perfect for creating flowers with colorful centers or giving the impression that the ring is a frame for an image or design that's glued to the lid. You can either tie a ribbon onto the canning ring so you can hang it on a wall or, if you prefer, you can glue a magnet to the back and use it to spice up your boring fridge.
