Tips To Help You Prevent Scorpions From Climbing Into Your Bed

We can think of very few worse bed companions to wake up next to than scorpions. These feisty little arachnids can be found on every continent (except Antarctica) and can be found in various types of climates. The states in southwest regions of the U.S., such as Texas, California, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico are the most susceptible to scorpion populations. Just like spiders, there a variety of scorpion species with varying venomous levels, but one thing is sure, you don't want to be caught cuddling up next to one, as they can deliver painful pinches with their pincers or strike you with a venomous sting .

That's why you should take precautions to prevent scorpions from climbing into your bed, like by maintaining a clean space with clutter-free floors. You can also make sure to eliminate any possible access points directly to your bed, which can help put your mind at ease and get you a good nights rest.

Don't give scorpions a ramp to your bed

Sorry to tell you that scorpions are typically pretty adept climbers and able to scale many surfaces, including your walls. That's why it's so important to not give them any easy access to your bed. To start, move your bed an 1 to 2 inches away from the walls, so even if a scorpion hops up there, it can't easily transfer over. Similarly, you may not want to push the nightstands too close to the bedside. One way to prevent your bed legs from becoming a scorpion ramp is to cover them in a smooth surface, which scorpions can't get traction on. Heavy-duty glass mason jars can be slid under your bed frame's legs, just take care not to put too much weight on them.

Consider your bedding as well. Bed skirts and oversized duvets can be very helpful when it comes to covering up storage or messes under the bed, but they can also be clung to by scorpions. Instead, try to tuck in your sheets and comforter so they aren't left dangling

Scorpions love a messy bedroom

In the same vain, be sure to fully make your bed each morning. Don't allow your pillows or bed linens to sit on the floor at any point during the day, because you never know what will have crawled into them when you go to bed at night. The good news is that making your bed every day is an easy way to make your bedroom feel more luxurious, as well as keeping scorpions out, so it's really a win-win.

Keeping your bedroom clean in general makes for good scorpion prevention. That's because when scorpions crawl inside the home, they're looking for a comfortable, warm space to hunker down and lay low. So they aren't likely to want to settle down in the middle of your floor, or even lay exposed underneath your bed. Things like clothes, shopping bags, and shoes are magnets for critters of all sorts, and tidying up the floor of your room eliminates all of these possible shelters, which is why it's key to keep your home clutter-free to ward off scorpions. If these methods aren't quite enough to give you peace of mind, don't lose heart. There are plenty of essential oils that can help get scorpions out of the house, or you can look for commercial scorpion repellants.
