HGTV's Drew Scott Shares Calming Design Elements To Consider For Your Home Gym

Having hosted multiple television shows centered on home renovation, Drew Scott definitely knows what constitutes good design. So does his twin brother, Jonathan Scott. In fact, they put this shared skill to the test in their television show "Brother vs. Brother," where they compete against each other to see who can renovate a home to sell for the highest price. In Season 7, Episode 3, the brothers were tasked with designing an additional dwelling unit (sometimes referred to as a granny pod or mother-in-law suite) as well as various bonus spaces. As part of his team's renovation, Drew Scott created a wellness room featuring elements he described on YouTube as having a "calming eco vibe."

So what exactly does a serene home gym look like? Scott's concept begins with bright white paint to open up the space and create an airy feeling. Cladding the floor and ceiling in light-colored wood brings warmth to the room, while natural materials like wicker baskets, jute rugs, and floor-to-ceiling linen drapes offer texture. A large houseplant lends a soothing touch of nature to the space as well as a small dose of color. These various elements are definitely a far cry from the cold, often sterile pieces you'd normally expect to find in a fitness area. As for the exercise equipment, Scott kept it minimal with a spin bike, yoga mats, and a Pilates reformer. The lack of clutter further enhances the feeling of tranquility and harmonizes well with the soft color palette.

Create a calming space for your workouts

If you're interested in creating a similar workout space that's as soothing as it is functional, we've done some digging to find various options to choose from. Fortunately, Drew Scott lists many of the materials from the show on the brothers' website, drew & jonathan. While the precise paint color is not included in his list, it appears to be on the warmer end of the spectrum, making both "White Snow" by Sherwin-Williams or "Swiss Coffee" by Behr excellent options to get a similar look. The exact reclaimed wood planks used on the ceiling are no longer available, but these Ekena Millwork Wood Mosaic Wall Tiles from Amazon for $20 a tile are an affordable alternative.

Scott went with custom Parisian pleat drapery for the space, but these Aersas Pinch Pleat Curtains from Amazon for $39 are a close match. Another great Amazon dupe? The Safavieh Sisal Runner Rug for $36, which similarly has a sleek black border. One of the standout accessories in the space is the footed woven basket Scott uses to store yoga mats. If you're on a tight budget, you could also use any woven basket (perhaps one that's thrifted, even) for a similar look. While the plant Scott chose appears to be some sort of palm, there are a number of houseplants that are perfect for growing indoors that would further enhance the calming vibes.
