Prevent Home Burglaries By Identifying A Clear Warning Sign Of A Thief

Any home can become the target for burglaries, but there are sometimes signs that can warn you early that your property is at risk. Knowing what these are could give you time to take action, improve security, or notify the authorities before the worst happens. 

Burglars often take a close look at a home before they decide to break in. They may make note of the security system or look for the best ways to gain entry. If they take an interest in your home, they may mark it in some way. They could add some painter's tape to your home's front door, alter a piece of yard décor, or make another small change to your house. Later on, they'll check back to see if you've fixed the problem — this is one of the subtle ways burglars can tell when no one is home. If you've noticed anything like this, it could be a sign that your home is being targeted. However, in addition to simple marks such as these, they may also vandalize your home in other ways and cause more extensive damage.

Beyond making subtle marks, a burglar may damage your home by breaking a window with a rock. They might also add a bit of graffiti. Like with smaller markings, they'll check to see whether these problems get fixed. They may vandalize your home for more practical reasons as well, such as deciding to damage a security camera ahead of a break-in, or tampering with door and window locks. You may find that they've messed with your security lights – a loose porch light bulb is a dangerous red flag. In some cases, burglars might even let your dog out of the yard to keep themselves safer when breaking in.

Of course, there are other signs that a thief may be breaking in. If strangers are lurking around your property and taking photos, or if unfamiliar cars have been sitting nearby, take note. A stranger may even knock on your door pretending to provide a service or take surveys to see if anybody answers, or to get a closer look at the home. You could also find that trash is missing – burglars may dig through your trash bin to get personal information. If you notice any of these issues, be sure to take extra steps to protect your home. Consider installing a security system, maximizing outdoor lighting to improve home security, and calling the police to ensure you'll be as safe as possible. Identifying the signs is a great precautionary first step, but if you notice any of these things, you should also take action.
