How To Completely Transform Your Bedroom Using Popular IKEA Items

If you're planning a bedroom makeover, IKEA is a smart place to shop. Not only are the price tags affordable (which is a massive plus, as room makeovers can get expensive fast) and the designs versatile, but they also stock everything from furniture to electrical fittings. To get you started, House Digest spoke exclusively with Erika Dale, interior designer and founder of Erika Dale Interior Design, who shares some of her favorite IKEA items — plug-in wall-mounted sconces, handmade palm leaves, and beautiful drapery — to add to your bedroom.

One of the easiest ways to add light to your bedroom is to use a plug-in wall-mounted sconce. Dale suggests looking at the RORKULT flush-mounted wall lamp, the SINNERLIG wall sconce, or the MÅNALG sconce. "Especially over small nightstands that lack the space for table lamps, the plug-in design allows you to customize your space with mood and task lighting without the need for adding wiring," Dale said.

If you don't already have bedside lights, mounting a pair can really transform the space, adding that layered source of lighting that designers love. Dale shares that it is easy to customize these lamps to give them a high-end feel. "Add a timer or smart bulb to personalize your lighting schedule to your routine," Dale explained. "Consider adding a paintable cord cover to hide the wire and paint it the same color as the wall for a custom look." No matter what IKEA light fixture you choose, adjusting its current features can make your bedroom feel more like your own.

Add some soothing décor

At the end of a long day, you want to enter a space that feels comfortingly like your own. And one of the simplest ways to give your bedroom a refresh without spending a fortune is to head to IKEA and check out their décor section, as it happens to house some dreamy finds. When House Digest spoke exclusively with Dale, she suggested adding the MOLNSKOG handmade palm leaves to your bedroom décor. "I love a bedroom to feel soothing and organic," Dale shared, adding "These handmade palm leaves are the perfect décor item for incorporating into a gallery wall or grouping together in an arrangement for maximum impact and natural texture."

Dale also suggested weaving the IKEA palm leaves in with any existing decorative pieces, saying "I also love the idea of layering them with other décor items on a small display shelf for extra visual interest and depth." If you need a shelf, she suggests checking out the LINDÅSEN display shelf on your next trip to IKEA. If you're less into the organic modern aesthetic and instead want to release your inner designer with dopamine decorating, IKEA also has a few colorful décor finds, such as the bright yellow KOPPARBJÖRK vase. Pro tip: You can even shop the entire IKEA site by color, which is perfect for those who have a very specific palette in mind.

Add some beautiful bedroom drapes

Shades and drapes are an essential part of every bedroom. Not only can they help keep the sun out of your eyes and give you some privacy, but they also add to your bedroom's overall aesthetic, adding softness to the space. During House Digest's exclusive interview with Dale, she recommended looking at the IKEA SANELA velvet curtains, DYTÅG linen curtains, and the boldly patterned VILDPERSILJA curtains. "Incredible looking drapery doesn't have to be custom or expensive, but it sure goes a long way in making a space look finished, soft, and welcoming," Dale said. "Go dramatic with a moody velvet drape, opt for elegant and classic linen sheers, or add some color and fun with a bold pattern."

Beyond the traditional use of covering up windows, there are also many unusual ways to decorate with curtains, such as creating a canopy bed with tracks on the ceiling, replacing a closet door with a curtain or covering up open storage. Dale also shared some simple ways to make basic IKEA curtains look luxe and fit your own style. "Double up the panels on each side for extra fullness or consider adding a fun trim to the edges to add some one-of-a-kind personality," the designer shared.
