The Ruffle Trend Is Back: How To Bring The Look Into Your Home Without Overdoing It
Believe it or not, the ruffle trend is back, and decorating your home with ruffles can be a fun and affordable way to add a new design to your living space — if you don't overdo it. House Digest spoke exclusively with Julie Jones, California Certified Interior Designer and Founder of Julie Jones Designs, about the return of the ruffle trend.
According to Jones, there are lots of easy ways to add ruffle accents to your home. "Throw pillows are an inexpensive and temporary way to bring ruffles into your interior," Jones said. "A bed skirt is another way you can add ruffles. If they are the only thing in the room with ruffles, I don't think you risk overdoing it." But what does overdoing the ruffles trend look like and how do you avoid this mistake?
Is there such thing as too many ruffles?
Keeping up with the latest trends (whether it be unexpected '90s design trends that are making a bold comeback or the return of ruffles) can be a great way to freshen up your home's decor. However, you do run the risk of going overboard if you aren't careful.
Jones shared, "When many things in the room have ruffles like an accent chair, curtains, and pillows you aren't allowing them to be unique and distinct. Too much of the same texture can put you into a very niche category." While she says that the grand millennial or cottage core styles can include more ruffled textures in a room, adding more than one ruffled item in any other room's decor style would be overdoing it. "It is like a room having too much of a good thing. I like leopard print, but I'm not going to put leopard print on more than one thing in my room. It is too distinct and therefore loses the uniqueness and originality."
Will this trend stand the test of time?
Trends tend to fade. The most popular home decor trends from the decade you were born may be coming back in style — or they may already be out again. You are likely asking yourself if it is worth the investment to add ruffles to your home if it is just going to disappear.
Explaining her thoughts on the longevity of the ruffles trend, Jones said, "If there's one thing I've seen in my career, it's that history repeats itself. I grew up in the '80s and '90s and there were ruffles everywhere," she said. "On our clothing, curtains, and furniture. As soon as something is overdone it's on its way out as a trend. So if it continues to gain popularity again, it will be a trend timestamped in 2024." Although ruffles may soon go out of style, making sure your home is a space you love is important. So if you love ruffles, lean into the return of the ruffles trend!
