How To Capture HGTV's Erin & Ben Napier's English Apothecary Look In Your Home

On an episode of HGTV's "Home Town," Erin and Ben Napier give a couple an English apothecary home that is straight out of a fairytale. Have you been wondering how to decorate your home like an English cottage and give it an earthier flair? House Digest spoke exclusively with Erika Dale, Interior Designer and Founder of Erika Dale Interior Design, about how to achieve the look in your own home.

The English apothecary look gives homeowners a cozy cottage feel with organic touches. "The Napiers created a look for this home that is one part quaint English cottage and one part eclectic apothecary style," Dale shared. "The English cottage style is all about natural colors and motifs, organic wood finishes, vintage but not-too-precious antiques, and an incredible mix of textiles with patterns from floral to plaid to create a lived-in yet effortlessly chic vibe. Apothecary is all about rustic materials and showcasing quirky curiosities, specifically those that are botanical or organic, in ways that are reminiscent of an old pharmacist's shop."

How can you achieve this style?

The English apothecary style is a blended design that can easily be created in a homeowner's or renter's living space. When House Digest spoke exclusively with Dale, she described how to give your home an antique aesthetic with a lived-in vibe, and a bit of horticultural decor to pull it all together.

For the English side, add organic wood touches through the home's trim, like on the show, or through furniture pieces. Then, head to the thrift store to find antiques to display, and check out a local home goods store for some cozy textiles.

Dale also explained how to best incorporate the apothecary look. "This could be using vintage jars for storing pantry items or dried herbs, pressed flowers displayed in a frame, an unusual vintage oddity, or showcasing a classic apothecary table with a series of small drawers, the furniture item most often associated with the style." You could even DIY your own apothecary jars for beautiful storage around the house.

Create a balance between the apothecary and English looks

While the Napiers' design is certainly stunning, every designer has their own unique preferences. When House Digest spoke exclusively with Dale, we asked if there is anything she would have done differently to bring the English apothecary style to the home. "I personally feel like the house looks more English cottage with a hint of apothecary, so if you wanted a more balanced split, you could lean heavier into the weird and wild world of apothecary curiosities," Dale shared. "Look for moodier hues, antique objects that look almost gothic in nature, vintage lighting with exposed Edison bulbs, and lean a little more into the slightly-mad scientist side of apothecary with things like butterflies in shadow boxes or bell jars with plants/objects."

While the aesthetic may seem like a trend, in reality, this look brings a fresh design to two more traditional looks. As Dale explained, "Both styles are full of eclectic vintage charm and have been around for ages, so while the combination is trending right now, the curated look is time-tested." So while you're deciding how to choose the perfect design style for your space, consider the English apothecary — it may be your new favorite decor!
