Hide That Bulky Smart Litter Box With A Clever DIY Enclosure

Many cat owners would agree that dealing with the litter box is one of the few disadvantages of owning an indoor feline. You have to scoop it, replace it, and clean the litter box often. But before you do all that, you have to find a good place to put it. This can be challenging if you have a smart litter box or limited space in your home. Or, maybe you do have the space, but you would rather keep the litter box out of sight, away from indoor rooms and shared areas. YouTuber Household How To shared a DIY enclosure solution to hide your smart litter box. You can build an enclosure in your garage, place the litter box inside, and create a tunnel leading from inside your home to the enclosure.

Although the finished product is a nifty, professional-looking privacy area that your kitty will likely appreciate, the assembly process requires some construction skills, patience, and an assistant. And of course, you'll need to purchase the materials and tools to build the enclosure. These include melamine (particle board) panels, a clear acrylic sheet, a circular saw, and safety glasses.

You can cut your boards yourself at home, or have the hardware store do it for you, assuming you know the dimensions in advance. In either case, when measuring, make sure to allow enough room for your cat to walk around the box.

How to build the wall-to-garage litter box enclosure

The enclosure consists of four board panels for the walls and roof, and a clear acrylic access panel, but feel free to customize. The connector tunnel consists of two square panels and three rectangular panels. You will cut five total square holes for the wall-to-garage connection. For the assembly of the boards, drill pilot holes first to prevent the boards from cracking, and assemble all the panels with wood screws.

Once the tunnel cuboid is complete, you can create the connections. First, cut a hole in one of the long panels to face the wall, and another on a short panel to face the enclosure. Next, install a pet door by cutting a hole in the garage wall, one in the interior wall, and a third in one side of the enclosure. If desired, frame the interior side of the wall hole with trim. For the clear panel, create a frame from the particle boards, and assemble it with pocket holes. Cut the acrylic sheet to size and attach the sheet to the frame. Affix the framed acrylic panel to the enclosure using hinges.

After construction is complete, position the tunnel and enclosure in place, add the smart litter box, and wait for your kitty to discover it. The full assembly is a bit labor-intensive, but the end result will be worth the effort.
