Don't Toss Your Scrap Wood. Easily Turn It Into Chic Minimalistic Wall Art Instead

Wood projects are great for designing your own home décor, but there always seem to be scraps left over. Rather than throwing away bits of unused lumber, you can store them for a rainy-day art project. Wood is such a versatile product to use in an artistic composition. Even for a beginner, the result will be one-of-a-kind pieces of wall art that will add a unique touch to your home. TikTok user @livingwithley understood the assignment and did just this, transforming a pile of 1-inch-by 2-inch boards into an abstract design.

To get the look, she cut boards to fit into geometric patterns and secured them to a large, thin rectangle panel. She then stained them all a dark walnut brown and hung the sculpture on her wall. If you're looking for ways to incorporate abstract art in your home, this scrap wood DIY might be the answer. Check out how to reuse your timber pile, and create a modern masterpiece.

Transforming unused scrap wood into a work of art

Before getting started on this reuse-and-upcycle project, you'll need to gather a few necessary supplies. Along with the pieces of unused lumber, you'll need a saw, wood glue, clamps, and stain. The glue is available from Home Depot for $3.97. Amazon has a wide selection of stain in various shades, including the Varathane four-pack in dark walnut with an easy applicator for $21.52. If you don't have clamps, check out the WorkPro spring models on Amazon for $16.99. Remember to find a large piece of wood or plywood to use as the canvas for this piece. With your supplies ready, it's time to channel your inner Picasso.

There are many ways to use leftover wood scraps, but this has to be the most artistic. Begin by measuring the background board and cutting 1-inch-by-2-inch planks to frame it. Use wood glue and clamps to lock everything in place. Next, cut three boards to form a zigzag inside the frame. Secure them in place and continue cutting the rest of the wood to fit between the frame and the zigzag outline. After the glue dries, stain it and give it a spray of clear coat. To really make this piece pop, consider painting each board a different color, or painting the backdrop a dark black to add depth. Customize it with different shapes and designs to make your wood scrap masterpiece your own.
