Before You Throw Out Your Old Leather Belts, Consider Making A Lounge Chair
Looking for a way to use belts you no longer want to wear? Leather belts are usually made of sturdy all-natural leather, making them a durable natural substance that will not break nor stretch under most conditions. It also means that the leather becomes richer, softer, and more charmingly supple with time. While there are many excellent ways to repurpose an old belt around the house, one of the most clever is to fashion them into a stunning woven chair that incorporates numerous belts and a wooden frame.
All you need are several natural leather belts and a frame to weave them on (artificial leather may not be as durable as all-natural leather and may snap or break). The more variation in color, texture, and design (including intricately stamped or braided pieces), the more beautiful your finished project will be. This is a perfect chance to repurpose an old chair without a cushion or refinish a second-hand chair. Not only is the project very inexpensive to do, but it's eco-friendly, meaning both the chair frame and the belts will not end up in a landfill anytime soon. It's also an opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture that bears the craftsmanship of much more expensive versions available from retailers like Target and Wayfair. The chairs are perfect for rustic and boho style spaces, and a perfect fit for styles like viral coastal cowgirl décor or an organic modern aesthetic.
Making a leather belt chair
Begin by sanding the chair frame, then refinish or paint it to get your desired look. To prepare the old belts for the project, rub or spray them with a leather conditioner to make them more supple, flexible, and easy to work with. This process will prevent any cracking or creasing because they are dried out. Allow the belts to dry overnight.
It helps to disassemble the chair to make the project easier. This will allow you to lay it flat and weave your belts around the supports. Working vertically on the seat, wrap each piece around the frame and attach it with a staple gun. Space the belts evenly with ½ -inch gaps between them to allow you to weave other belts crosswise. Pulling the belts tight prevents sagging when you sit on them and keeps the surface firm. Weave the leather strips through the row of vertical belts you have already attached, continuing to pull them tightly. You can trim any extra leather hanging underneath or on the back with sharp scissors. Repeat the same process on the back of the chair and then reassemble your frame.
While the Buildipedia tutorial uses a wood frame, you can use an iron or old aluminum lawn chair frame. Fasten the belts with staples or rivets to create a loop over the frame. If you plan to use the chair outdoors, waterproof it with a leather sealant or beeswax. This project is also great for a simple footstool or ottoman.
