Before You Buy Into The Bouclé Trend, Keep One Important Factor In Mind

Bouclé, that distinctively textured fabric made from fibers with small loops, has been taking the design world by storm. Not only are bouclé clothing and pillows trending, but you can even get an entire chair or sofa in this unique and nubby textured material. As beautiful and unique as it is, though, it can quickly become grungy, dirty, and worn thanks to the challenges of cleaning and maintaining its unusual texture.

Cleaning bouclé furniture requires brushing and then vacuuming the furniture. You can also use a small amount of water and detergent in a spray bottle to spot treat any stains. It's important not to rub too hard when cleaning bouclé though, as that can damage the texture. Even worse, since rubbing can change the texture, you may notice that areas of your furniture that get a lot of use can begin to look ragged and show signs of wear and pilling. All this damage can be especially noticeable if you're thinking about getting a white sofa or pale grey chair in the material.

How to use boucle without the downsides

Because of the cleaning requirements and its delicate nature, investing in an expensive bouclé piece may not be for you if you don't want to commit to caring for it. This is especially true it you have kids, pets, or a high-traffic home. That doesn't mean you have to completely let the trend pass you by though. One lower-cost way to dip your toes into the texture, is by DIYing your own boucle chair out of an IKEA chair, pool noodles, and fabric.

Another good way to enjoy bouclé without the headache of constantly cleaning and the stress of trying to avoid damage, is by investing in a few pillows or throw blankets. Not only are these far less expensive ways to enjoy bouclé, but they're also easier to keep out of the way of messes. While it isn't clear whether bouclé furniture is truly going out of style any time soon, this high maintenance fabric definitely isn't for everyone.
