DIY A Perfect Dupe For Spooky West Elm Candles To Light Up Your Home This Fall

Home decor that is chic while also being inexpensive can be hard to come by no matter what time of year it is. DIYing cheap and easy Halloween decor can be a way to make your home feel a little more seasonal –– and you can still make it look like you went to a fancy store to buy it. After all, there's a dupe out there for practically everything, especially if you know where to shop. That's how Christina Clericuzio, a.k.a. @flipdaddie on Instagram, creates some beautiful West Elm-inspired black pillar candles for her Halloween decor at a fraction of the price.

In her video, Clericuzio finds some products to mimic the look of these wax drip flameless pillar candles, which retail at West Elm for $50 apiece and do not include the black stoneware pedestals that they show on the retailer's website. Although gothic decor can be very chic and trendy depending on your aesthetic, it's hard to justify any $50 LED candle unless you plan on keeping it out year-round –– especially if it doesn't come with a holder. This is why it's better to get the look for less by scoping out some other home goods stores. In her video, Clericuzio also finds some pillar candle pedestals to go with the black candles to complete the look.

Cheaper ways to make your black pillar candles for Halloween

There are lots of ways you can DIY the look of West Elm products as Clericuzio does. In her Instagram video, she found flameless black candles in the dollar section at Target for $3 each, which she pairs with black pillar candle pedestals that retail for only $1.25 at Dollar Tree. All in all, a set of two candles (if you find the exact same items) will set you back about $8.50. The dollar section at Target can vary from store to store, so you can also opt for a set of three LED candles for about $29, or real pillar candles for $16 each at Target. At Home also sells black LED candles for only $5 for a 4-inch candle and $7 for a 6-inch candle. For a large display, Amazon sells a set of nine remote-controlled LED candles for $30.

If you can't find the right LED candles in black, rest assured that you can effectively spray paint LED candles and still be able to use them as long as you cover the "flame" when painting. You can even use hot glue to create faux dripping wax before you paint to complete the illusion. If you're truly on a shoestring budget, you can also use a combination of hot glue, cut-up pool noodles, and black tea lights to make your black pillar candles, much like user @thecraftaisle does in their TikTok video. And you can usually find pool noodles year-round at Dollar Tree.
