The Charming Hobbit Hole Garden Shed That You Can Build Yourself

If your favorite part of the "Lord of the Rings" universe is the quaint, green "shire" where all of the hobbits live, then this do-it-yourself project is for you. While you'd normally need to fly to New Zealand to visit the famous "Hobbiton," the home of the hobbits seen in the movies, you can build yourself a shire to bring this fantasy world to life in your own backyard. With a simple DIY hack, the front door of any typical garden shed can become a hobbit hole in no time.

The first step of this project is to acquire a garden shed. If you have this already, you can skip to the next steps, but if you don't, there are plenty of cheap ways to make this happen. There are plenty of top-rated DIY shed kits you can put up in no time from stores such as Home Depot. You can also buy pre-made garden sheds — there are tons of great options for Home Depot sheds for your tiny home makeover, especially if you've got money to spend on the project and have the yard space for something larger.

How to hobbit-ify your garden shed

Once you've got your shed ready for a hobbit makeover, gather the rest of the materials. YouTube creator Once Upon A Bungalow completed this DIY project using brick veneer, gorilla glue, a diamond-blade grinder, green and yellow paint, and circular mirrors. She also remade the door to her shed using simple wood paneling, but that's not necessary to achieve the hobbit aesthetic.

Outline a circle on your shed's front wall by attaching a string to the center, then using a pen to trace the string's path in a complete circle. Then, cut your brick veneer pieces in half with a grinder and glue them around the edge of the circle. As you go, make sure you leave enough room around the door's hinges so that it still opens, but since the brick is thin, there shouldn't be much of an issue. Make sure that the glue adhering to the brick veneer has completely dried before painting your shed, and then you're free to go in with the classic bright green of a hobbit door.

A few optional steps to increase the shire vibes: you can use small, circular mirrors to replicate a window and line them with brick veneer as well. In the shire, most hobbit doors had knobs in the very center, so you can use leftover glue to attach an ornate knob. Finally, plant vines around the shed so that it's engulfed in green.
