Master Spray Painting Your DIYs With Two Easy Finds From Dollar Tree
Spray paint is a low-effort crafter's best friend that allows for budget-friendly transformations. Just a few passes with a low-cost can of spray paint, and your project has a new, colorful exterior. Yet, it's not without its drawbacks. Getting an even coat can be a challenge, and there's always the object's tricky underside that's a pain to paint. YouTuber Whitney from Whiskey and Whit is a whiz with DIY hacks you can find at the dollar store. So, naturally, she came up with a way to improve spray painting that targets both of these problems using two Dollar Tree finds.
Whitney hit Dollar Tree for a metal cooling rack and a plant saucer with wheels; setting the rack on top of the rolling saucer resulted in a lazy susan-like invention that makes spray painting super simple. The wheels let you rotate the object you're painting without touching it. Plus, the grids of the wire rack make limited contact points on the base of what you're painting and double as a drying rack. For larger projects with multiple parts to paint, grab multiple cooling racks. The extra racks allow you to deal with more than one piece at a time. Once the paint is applied, simply lift the rack off the saucer, and set the piece aside to dry.
Try some tweaks
While you may not be able to find exactly what Whitney used for her painting trick, you can try these variations of the idea. Pick up this pair of cookie sheets that are slightly smaller than the cooling racks. Set the rack across one of the cookie sheets, and you've got a combo of drip catcher and drying rack. You'll hardly miss the wheels on the saucer as the lip of the cookie sheet makes turning the contraption easy while saving your fingers from errant paint.
Or, hit a little closer to our DIYer's mark with this alternative. If there isn't a rolling flower pot saucer in stock, nab a Dollar Tree lazy-susan. Just as Whitney did with the wheeled saucer, set the cooling rack on the lazy-susan, and turn the apparatus as you spray. Then, lift away the rack with ease for the paint to dry in an out-of-the-way spot. If you want to further boost your skills, check out these tips from TikTok that make spray painting a breeze.
