Repurpose Your Worn-Out Jeans Into A Gardening Apron With An Easy Trick

When you're toiling away in the garden, you want to make sure you have everything you need close by. Keeping seeds, gloves, shears, and other essential gardening tools at arm's reach will make your thumbs greener. That's where a DIY gardening apron comes in. Just by snipping off the legs and cutting around the pockets of an old pair of jeans, you can create a handy apron perfect for keeping your gardening equipment nearby when you're in the yard.

You can make the DIY garden apron from denim shorts, jeans, overalls, or skirts as long as they have pockets. If your garb doesn't have pockets, they can still be used, but you'll have to go through the extra step of adding the storage pouch. Preferably, the bottoms should be denim, as the sturdy fabric will handle the wear and tear from yard work best. Your jeggings might work, but they won't be as durable. For this project, all you need is a pair of jeans, a marker, scissors, and a few minutes to create this gardening accessory.

How to DIY a denim garden apron

First, lay your jeans upright on a flat surface. Next, draw a line across the garment starting from below the bottom of the left pocket, making your way up to the closure button, then back down below the bottom of the right pocket. The line should look like a camel's hump or bell curve graph. Make sure the mark is drawn underneath the base of the pockets so when you cut the denim you don't trim the lining of the pouch. Next, turn the jeans around and draw a similar line on the back. Trace around the pockets and up to the waist band. Then, cut along the line. That's it! Just button the apron around your waist and now you have a comfy gardening tool belt.

The pockets are ideal to store small essential everyday garden tools and accessories, while the belt loops are great for hooking items so you can work hands free. One way to upgrade this DIY is to add more pockets. Use a needle and thread to attach pieces of the extra denim to the apron's side. Fabric glue works too, and keeps this a no-sew project. However, if you're satisfied with your creation as is, you could always save the denim scraps for another clever way to repurpose old jeans.
