Upcycle Your Old T-Shirts Into Bespoke Seating To Spruce Up Your Home

Raise your hand if you have a stash of old t-shirts that you just can't bear to part with. You know, those concert tees that you haven't worn in ages or your old sports jersey that's now three sizes too small. Or, maybe you can't let go of those travel shirts that bring back happy memories. Sound familiar? It's time to put these sentimental shirts to good use — as in, turn them into statement pieces instead of hogging up space in your wardrobe. And let us tell you, it doesn't get more unique than reusing t-shirts as chair cushion covers.

Not only will you be able to rescue your old tops, but you also get to bring your humdrum furniture back to life with a fun makeover. Seriously, how cool would it be if your dining chairs were all dressed up in your favorite merch tees? Way cool, if you ask us. Any chair with a padded seat will do (even the dusty one sitting in your garage). Besides that, the only things you need are graphic t-shirts, a staple gun, and paint. That's right, there won't be any cutting or sewing for this repurposing idea.

How to personalize chairs with your old, favorite t-shirts

Start by unscrewing the seat cushion from the frame. Note that you don't need to remove the existing upholstery if you don't want to. That said, you're better off replacing the foam if it's flattened since you want the chair to be both comfortable and stylish. Next, pull the shirt over the cushion, adjust it so the print is nice and straight, then staple the shirt to the back of the cushion. Do the same thing for the backrest if it's also upholstered. And, that's about it for the cover.

Don't screw the seat back on just yet! If you want to give your seating an even more custom look, paint the frame to match the tee. Pick a vibrant accent color on the fabric to transform the chair into an eye-catching piece of art. You could even add stencils to the back pane and color-block different parts of the furniture. Or, paint your chair a neutral (like black or white) to add personality into your decorating scheme while staying timeless.

Can't make up your mind on a color? The best part about this project, besides the fact that it's easy to do yet high on originality, is that you can try different looks for each chair. Plus, you can always spray paint your wood furniture for a quicker updo. Once you're done jazzing up the piece, reattach the seat back into the frame and watch it steal the show wherever you place it.
