Thankfully, Orkin Entomologist Frank Meek spoke to House Digest about the signs of a Joro spider infestation and how to keep them out of your yard. He revealed that these pests can be identified by their large yellow-tinted webs that are shaped like wheels. The female Joro spiders should catch your eye pretty easily due to their bright colors. According to Meek, you can eliminate these arachnids by removing their webs and minimizing the presence of other insects in your yard. If this doesn't take care of the problem, you will need to hire pest control professionals.

"It is important to note that Joro spiders do not typically cause what would be considered a traditional infestation," Meek also shared while speaking exclusively to House Digest. "They can be found in large numbers in some circumstances, but generally do not enter homes like many common pests do." After learning more about how to identify and eliminate these spiders, you should not have to worry about walking into one of their large webs in your yard.

The physical attributes of Joro spiders should help you spot them quickly. "Joro spiders themselves are easy to recognize because the females are bright yellow and black with blue-grey stripes," Meek explained while speaking exclusively to House Digest. "They're also large — potentially reaching 1 to 4 inches in leg span. Males are smaller and brown in color." If you have noticed spiders that fit this description popping up in your yard more often, it might be time to tackle the problem.

Although Joro spiders are not dangerous to humans or animals, they can overrun native spider populations when they begin reproducing too quickly, according to Meek. As a result, it is still in your best interest to get them under control. The expert shared a few additional tips on how to accomplish this. "Because Joro spiders are not dangerous, homeowners can simply remove their webs if they become a nuisance on a property," he explained. "Keeping outdoor areas clear of debris, trimming vegetation, and sealing cracks and gaps around the home are more ways to prevent Joro spiders from setting up their home in and around a property."

To keep the spiders from coming back, Meek recommends limiting the presence of the other insects they consume. You can do this by ensuring your outdoor space is free of debris and lighting that may attract other bugs. Consider putting other pest control measures in place as well.
