Good Bones Shares A Chic Kitchen Counter & Cabinet Combo You'll Want To Recreate
When it comes to kitchen cabinets, styles and trends abound. There's always something new you can do with colors and materials, and also with the other features in the room. One unique idea comes from "Good Bones" duo Mina Starsiak Hawk and Karen E. Laine's project on a charming old home. They choose different colors for the top and bottom cabinets and also for the main and island countertops. "We decided to do white uppers on this side of the kitchen because the pop of white draws your eye to this back wall and really pulls you into the space," said Mina, as seen on YouTube. "I wanted to mix and match the countertops and mom suggested butcher block."
In the episode, the "Good Bones" stars chose white top cabinets combined with blue bottom cabinets on one wall, all blue cabinets on the other wall, butcher block countertops for the main counters, and a white top for the island in the center. The stars of "Good Bones" are no stranger to the hot trend of blue cabinets but this combo creates the opportunity to get the best of both worlds in terms of warmth and coolness. By doing it this way, Mina and Karen cut through the coolness of the white and blue cabinets with the warmth of the brown countertops, but didn't overdo it by extending it to the island as well. This struck the right balance in the space in terms of keeping things light and charming.
Recreating the two-toned cabinets and mixed countertops combo
To recreate this well, you need to choose the complementary colors and materials. There's no hard rule about choosing cabinets or countertops first so just start with what you're more invested in and then design around it. For the cabinets, it's always good to use the lighter color for the top because it will make the kitchen look more open. Two timeless kitchen cabinet color interior designers swear by are greige (gray and beige) and navy and we think they will also go well together. Greige for the top cabinets and navy for the bottom will have a nice contrast. Don't be afraid to mix materials either. Natural wood cabinets are making a big comeback in kitchens so consider using them alongside greige as well.
For the countertops last, they should balance out the two tones of the cabinets. You can bring different materials together, as shown by Karen and Mina, but even the same material can offer various designs because of the unique patterns and veining you can choose from, so that gives you another option. For instance, you can use the same stone slab but choose the part with more streaks for the island so you can make a statement and then the more plain areas for the main counters.
