DIY A Rustic, Chic Toilet Paper Holder From An Old Lamp

Whether you've just picked up an old lamp from an estate sale or have one lying around that you've been wanting to repurpose, one super-creative upcycle is to turn it into a toilet paper holder. Best of all, the amount of effort you need to put into this DIY all depends on your preferred aesthetic.

The first step with this hack is to prepare your lamp. Remove the shade, unscrew the socket, cut off the harp if it has one, and you'll be left with the cord. That can be pulled through the lamp from the bottom. Once that's done, put the socket back in place, and then pop a roll of toilet paper on top to see how it all looks.

If you love how it looks without some kind of topper, leave it as is. Alternatively, now would be the time to seek out anything that could fit with the rest of the lamp's aesthetic. That could mean another estate sale stop-in, or simply getting creative with what you already have. Not sure where to start? YouTuber A Joyful Cottage took the latter route and picked a sugar bowl lid to top it all off. You could do the same thing with antique jar lids or even jewelry box lids. Whatever you choose, place it on top of the toilet roll, and once you're happy with the basic layout, it's time to personalize your craft.

Customize this hack according to your home's aesthetic

Making use of an old lamp, this hack is already suited to homes with that fit into the vintage or bookshelf-wealth interior design trends. As such, depending on the state of the lamp, you might not need any further customization. However, if you think the lamp could use some sprucing up, you could also take inspiration from this DIY vintage brass coat rack hack and give it a few coats of metallic paint. This is ideal if the topper you've used is metallic, as you'll be able to make it look as though it was always one set.

Alternatively, this hack would also work seamlessly in a home filled with shabby chic decor. Sand the lamp down, and then go in with some chalk paint. Amazon stocks a variety of Country Chic chalk paint for around $15, so you can go with a hue that matches the rest of your bathroom.

Of course, these are just some of the ways you can personalize your lamp-turned-toilet-paper-holder. You could also paint designs on it or even play around with decoupage. However you choose to make this craft your own, it's guaranteed to be super unique — even if you end up leaving it as is.
