Sunflowers have many different significances making them the perfect year-round decor. In Greek mythology, a water nymph fell in love with Apollo (the sun) and spent all of her time watching him. Apollo did not notice the water nymph, but the other gods did and decided to turn her into a sunflower. Because of this myth, the sunflower often symbolizes dedication. When given as a gift, sunflowers symbolize adoration. In Chinese culture, the flower is a symbol of good fortune, vitality, intelligence, and happiness. Native American cultures relate the sunflower to ideas of harvest. No matter what the sunflower means to you, it is a lovely way to decorate your home.

How to create DIY sunflower artwork

For this project, you will need an 11x14 inch canvas, raffia, a round placemat, a hot glue gun, and spray paint. You should be able to find these supplies at a local dollar store, but if not, feel free to improvise a little. For instance, instead of a round placemat try a large round doily.

Start by cutting the round placemat in half. Then, cut one of the halves in half again. You should end up with one semi-circle and two quarters. Make spray paint projects a breeze  - go outside, place Styrofoam underneath your project, and cover one side of the placemats with the paint. While the video creator uses black spray paint, feel free to get creative and use colors to match your home's decor.

Once the paint has dried, arrange the placemats so that the cut edges line up with the edges of the canvas. The half piece will fit on one of the longest sides, and the quarter pieces will fit in the opposite two corners. Trace the outline of the placemat on the canvas using a pencil. Then, cut the raffia into short strings and hot glue them down on the traced curved edge to create the flower's petals. Place the hot glue on the canvas first and the raffia on top to avoid burning your fingers. Once the raffia is evenly distributed, glue down the placemats. Finally, hang it on the wall and admire your new artwork!
