If You Have Wrapping Paper Rolls Lying Around You Need To Try This Stunning DIY

What do holidays and birthdays have in common? If you guessed leftover wrapping paper rolls, you nailed it! After any celebration where you wrap presents, you're likely left with long cardboard tubes that haven't served any other purpose — until now. As it turns out, there's nothing that must go to waste thanks to the internet, and one clever DIY allows you to create the most stylish wall vases with leftover tubes that would otherwise be destined for the recycling bin. Besides wrapping paper rolls, all you need is spray paint, a lid from an old jar, and a bushel of faux flowers or stems that you want to display in your hanging vases.

While there are plenty of crafts to make use of your empty toilet paper rolls, wrapping rolls usually go to the recycling bin after use. Instead, save them for this clever DIY. Find space on your walls where you plan to hang one or several of these. The lid will act as your base, which you will stick the paper roll to and hang the whole piece on the wall. If you don't have a lid from an old jar, you can also use a circular Tupperware top. Just ensure it's sturdy enough to hold up the tube properly when florals are added. A metal jar lid is ideal because the lip that screws onto a jar can also be placed on a small nail, removing the need to add a step by securing a wire.

Paint and decorate your wrapping paper rolls

Out of all the clever ways to repurpose an old mason jar lid, this DIY is one of the most stylish and lets you recycle multiple items at once. To begin making these decorations, lay out a plastic tarp so you can spray paint your items. You can paint your vase any color, but gold, matte black, or even white will match a variety of interior designs and help disguise the creases in the cardboard roll. Spray the entire lid with your paint of choice, then spray the tube the same color or in a contrasting tone, and allow both to dry fully before proceeding.

You can use any adhesive you prefer to secure the cardboard, but Nano tape is a good option (available at Walmart for $18.50), as well as Gorilla Glue (sold on Amazon for $9) or a hot glue gun. Place the tube on top of the lid so this circular piece is positioned at about the middle of the wrapping cardboard. It could also be placed slightly closer to the top of the cardboard tube as well. The lid should be added face up, so the bottom of the metal or plastic piece will be against the wall when you hang everything.

Hang the vases on your wall

Adhere the cardboard, then let this dry fully. If you chose a metal lid with a deep enough lip, you can add a small nail to your wall and simply hang your new creation by the "anchor." The finished product should look like a long vase, which you can now add a variety of faux florals, fauna, or even a small bouquet to — there are lots of options at Dollar Tree. Don't overload the cardboard, as it likely isn't sturdy enough to hold a lot of flowers. If your lid anchor can't hang from a nail on its own, you can glue a small piece of wire to the lid and secure it to a nail that way.

You can keep the length of the cardboard tube as-is or trim it if you prefer a shortened vase. You could also try making these with cardboard paper towel rolls instead of wrapping paper ones. Once you've hung them, enjoy your sustainable design that looks like a chic and expensive dupe from any home store. Save this hack for special occasions too, as these make great decorations for parties, and you can change up the color you paint the tubes to suit any theme. While TikTok can teach you how to DIY a vase from Dollar Tree or thrift store finds, Instagram users show that making your own from recycled materials is much more exciting, and you're doing your part for the planet!
