The Chic Canvas Decor DIY From TikTok That Practically Anyone Can Do

Let's be honest: Home decor can get pretty expensive, especially if you're committed to decorating every corner of your home. Artwork is no exception. One minute, you're filling your shopping cart with wall art you can't live without, and the next thing you know, your bank account is on life support. Lucky for you, we're savvy with our coins around here. On a mission to spice up a blank wall, we turned to TikTok and found the perfect DIY. It's easy, super affordable, and looks like the kind of art someone would drop a ton of money for. Our favorite part is that it goes with just about any interior style, be it modern, minimalist, farmhouse, boho-chic, or something else.

The project in question? Turning a blank canvas into a textured, abstract piece using only two things: self-adhesive, foam insulating tape (which you can get for under $10 on Amazon), and paint. Any paint will do, whether regular wall paint, acrylic, or spray paint — so long as it can stick to rubbery materials. Here's a closer look at the trendy canvas line art, plus how to give it your own twist.

How to recreate TikTok's eye-catching wall decor

First, start with a blank canvas. While TikTok user @sophfrais specifically used an 31 by 23-inch canvas, our advice is to choose the right size for your space. Size up (or go horizontal) if you're working with a large wall, and pick something smaller for narrow areas. And no need to limit this to a new canvas — you can thrift one and paint over it to create a new-to-you canvas. Next, draw squiggly lines. Remember: This is an experimental art style, so there's no right or wrong way to do it. Even a wonky circle shape and two wavy lines would look good on a small canvas, as shown in this Instagram post. Once you're satisfied with the patterns, adhere the foam strips on top of the design (you can add extra glue so they won't peel off), then use a stapler to secure the ends behind the canvas board.

Here's where the fun part comes in. You don't have to limit yourself to a neutral-toned canvas if that's not your vibe. Funky colors (like sky blue, yellow, and pink), as well as moody hues (think black, navy, and dark green), are guaranteed to add a splash of personality into your decorating scheme. You might even consider painting each corner a different color. Or, paint the canvas one color and the strips a contrasting shade so it pops even more. Hang it in the living room, bedroom, or entryway –  no one will guess it's a DIY.
