Add a sense of seclusion to your outdoor space by installing a privacy fence

Want a little privacy to your under-deck patio? Try adding simple wood planks that are the width of the space between two of your deck posts like this DIY video shows. Before you head to the lumber shop there are a few things to keep in mind. First, use lightweight wood planks like pine so that you don't have to hoist heavy pieces of wood up a ladder.

Next, seal the planks once installed to help reduce wear from the weather. Here's a quick guide for everything you need to know about waterproofing wood to help get you going.  Also, select your planks carefully to ensure they're straight. Believe us, that slightly askew board will drive you crazy; it's better to take the time to dig through the lumber pile to find the perfectly cut piece.

Add a pretty mini pond for patio aesthetics and mosquito control

Wouldn't it be great to add a calming water feature to your patio? This method lets you create a mini pond (also known as a mini water garden) wherever you want without needing an outlet nearby, thanks to the solar-powered pump. While the pump isn't necessary, it's a good idea to prevent water stagnation, which attracts mosquitos. Plus, adding a few small fish to your planter pond will help keep the mosquito population down since fish love to munch on mosquito larvae.

Got a sunny patio? Create a DIY sun shade

Need a little shade for your patio? Try this DIY project, which uses metal conduit piping to create a canopy frame. This easy frame is simple, giving you multiple ways to shade your patio once it's done. One thing you'll need to consider, though, is how you'll stop your shade from acting like a sail, launching your frame over to your neighbor's lawn on a windy day.

There are a few methods for securing your canopy frame into place. One option is to drive rebar into the dirt, then insert the pole over the rebar and secure it into place with glue, tape, etc. Another option is to put the conduit into a plastic plant pot and fill the pot with gravel or concrete. This YouTuber uses potting soil, which is probably okay since she's only using it for one pole, but it wouldn't be strong enough to brace all four poles against the wind.

Are mosquitos ruining your outdoor fun? Build a DIY mosquito canopy

This YouTuber takes the idea of a sun shade frame up a notch by using 4x4 posts nestled into concrete-filled planters to create a pergola, which is great for those who can't or don't know how to secure a permanent structure into place. Once the concrete is dry, add thinner furrow strips to the top to stabilize the pergola. Then hang mosquito netting across the furrows or use clotheslines. You can then either add more netting across the top or try making a DIY retractable canopy if you want a little sun protection, too.

Upgrade your old patio furniture with no-sew DIY cushions

Patio furniture can get worn down by sun and water over time, making them look old and uncomfortable. But patio furniture can get expensive, so it's worth giving your old furniture a little more life with new cushions. This DIY shows how you can create cushions easily without needing to pull out the sewing machine. If you decide to give this a try, choose waterproof or water-resistant fabric to help keep your outdoor cushions in tip top shape

Got a weird patio area? Turn it into a private oasis

This TikToker had a weird nook that she converted into her own private patio, which we absolutely love. But don't feel like you need to get as involved as she did. To get a look close to hers, try using some trellis boards that are attached to posts stabilized in concrete-filled planters. Then add an astroturf mat or a cute rug, some plants, a few patio chairs from the thrift store, and you're set!

Create a lush garden patio even if you're not a plant parent

Maybe you don't have a green thumb but still want to have the look of a lush garden oasis or have a patio area that gets a lot of sun and leaves you with crispy, scorched plants. No worries, as this TikToker shows how you can mimic a lush-looking fern planter by stuffing the planter full of pool noodles and topping it with fake ferns instead. This DIY is an excellent way to get some greenery in your outdoor spaces without trying to keep a real fern alive.

Brighten your patio up with these DIY solar hanging lights

Want to brighten up your patio space? Then head to your local dollar store and follow this DIY video! This uses staked solar lights, candy jars, and twine to create gorgeous hanging lights that can go anywhere you need a little illumination. Just be sure to seal the seam where the light meets the jar so that water doesn't get trapped inside. You can then hang these around your patio space or use garden hooks (also from the dollar store) to light up your backyard walkway.

Don't have a patio? It's easier than you think to build one!

If the idea of building your own patio leaves you feeling exhausted, don't worry. Though it might seem like a lot, This TikTok shows how a DIY patio space doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. To create a patio, you'll need an empty area, shovel, tamper, wheelbarrow, landscape fabric, stakes, scissors, pea gravel, and paving stones.

Start by clearing a section of your lawn with a shovel and flattening it with a tamper. Then, cut and stake landscape fabric to prevent weeds. Next, add paving stones to create a grid design and fill in the spaces with pea gravel. That's it!
