The Popular Company Behind Costco's Kirkland-Brand Mattress

If you're buying home products at Costco, you've probably encountered Kirkland Signature, which is the chain's house brand that appears on everything from clothing to golf clubs to food to gasoline. It's a significant source of revenue for Costco — according to The Motley Fool, it brought in an estimated $60 billion in revenue in 2021, which represented about one-quarter of the company's total annual earnings. The Kirkland Signature brand, which has been around for almost three decades, attempts to provide equal or better quality than national brands. And it often succeeds — Kirkland sheets have strong customer reviews, for example.

Now, Costco doesn't create and manufacture the Kirkland products itself — it typically goes into a partnership with another manufacturer to create them. For example, Costco partners with Georgia-Pacific and other companies to create its Kirkland-brand toilet paper. The warehouse doesn't always make it obvious who the manufacturing partner is, either. You won't find Georgia-Pacific listed prominently on the Kirkland toilet paper label, for example. When it comes to Kirkland brand mattresses, though, Costco doesn't try to hide its manufacturing partner: Stearns & Foster. Here's how it makes them and what it does for the Costco house brand.

Stearns & Foster's reputation

Stearns & Foster has been manufacturing for more than 175 years, merging with Sealy in 1993 and Tempur-Pedic in 2012. The company began focusing on delivering quality mattresses to high-end hotels early in its history. Stearns & Foster focuses on using luxurious materials and memory foams that provide comfort as well as back support and pressure point relief.

One of the key features that sets Stearns & Foster mattresses apart is the presence of titanium alloy coils. These are hand-crafted spirals with a design that's exclusive to the brand. Another major benefit comes from the firm edges that designers create with PrecisionEdge Technology. Whether you're sleeping in the center, at the edge, or somewhere in between, the mattress provides comfortable support. This technology helps with the durability of the mattress, too. Stearns & Foster designs also include a breathable cover and a layer of gel memory foam that help with comfort.

Does a Kirkland mattress match the quality of standalone Stearns & Foster?

At Costco, the only option you have is the Kirkland Signature by Stearns & Foster 14.5" Lakeridge Mattress. The queen size costs $999.99, while the king and California king each cost $1,199.99. These prices include delivery of the new mattress, haul away of the old one, and a set-up of the new one if you have the bedframe ready to go. The price does not include a box spring or frame.

Which Stearns & Foster-branded mattress is most similar to the Kirkland model? The closest model in price is the Stearns & Foster Studio Medium Tight Top Mattress, which is its cheapest option. It has a price of $1,749 at Wayfair for the queen size, while the king and California king sizes cost $2,399 each. This is a 14-inch model, compared to the 14.5-inch option at Costco. Both models have a Tencel cover that delivers moisture-wicking fibers, a premium layer of memory foam, an IntelliCoil innerspring design that goes to the edge, and the AirVent system. Both models offer a 10-year limited warranty.

Stearns & Foster offers higher-end mattresses, including the Reserve model, which costs $5,299 for the queen size and $5,899 for the king and California king sizes at Mattress Firm. The Reserve model has a 17-inch thickness. It includes additional comfort layers not present in the less expensive mattresses discussed earlier, such as the brand's exclusive IntelliCoil Micro HD innersprings.
