DIY A Whimsical Garden Fairy Door To Create A Magical Outdoor Summer Space

You don't need a magical wardrobe to get to Narnia this summer: All you need is a little imagination and a few tiny fairy doors, which you can glue or build into your garden's trees to turn your yard into a magical realm. Whether you just love the Cottagecore decor, or you have kids who enjoy playing make believe, this project is a sure way to give everyone a taste of the fantastical while the weather is warm and the outdoors are calling. Even if you can't hide your fairy door(s) among the trees, if you have a spare wall in your home and don't mind a kitschy addition, you can secure one indoors to bring a magical portal wherever you need it!

These fun little doors can be used for a variety of crafts, but one of the most whimsical options is securing them against a favored tree so it looks as if fairies have taken up residence in your yard. There are a variety of ways to connect the doors to your tree trunks. Depending on what you decide, you can secure a hook to the back of your door and add a small nail to the tree. This shouldn't harm the trunk, and then the door will be able to stay on the bark without worry of wind or other elements blowing it away. You can also just use a natural hollow area or a knot, which many trees have. Even if this is higher up, it will save you cutting into the tree and risking damage.

Add fairy doors to your garden or unused wall space

You don't necessarily need to adhere the door to a tree or fit it into a knot, you can also just prop them up and add rocks around the base to keep it in place. Fill in gaps with smaller stones and pebbles, then glue moss on these and around the door itself to make the surrounding landscape look realistic and intertwined. The more you add around your door, the more it will become a part of your fairy garden and feel like these places are alive with magic.

If you don't have a garden or outdoor area to keep your door, that's not a problem: you just have to get a little more creative with placement. One TikToker sawed into a wall that led to her under-stair closet, because it was unused, dead space that she could renovate. Not everyone wants to chop into their walls, but you can still adhere the door(s) to empty areas in a bedroom or hallway or living room, securing the fairy portal to a wall and then using clay or moldable foam to make the outline of the door look more flush. Shape the clay so that it spreads out from the surface you've attached it to, then use paint to match your existing decor so the whole area looks like a fairy door just appeared from another realm! You can even upgrade your bathroom Cottagecore aesthetic and add the door along your sink or disguised in a cabinet!
