What HGTV's TikTok Reveals About Chelsea & Cole DeBoer's Home Decor Style

In May 2024, fans of HGTV's "Down Home Fab" were treated to a fun "this or that" video on the network's TikTok account. In the video, Cole and Chelsea DeBoer gave their top home design picks — and funnily enough, the couple didn't agree on most things. However, it's safe to say these two have found a happy medium (one that includes paint and hardwood flooring).

For HGTV's TikTok, the DeBoers were asked to pick between a pool and a hot tub, tile or hardwood floors, paint or wallpaper, bungalow or rancher-style homes, and whether they'd prefer living by a lake or the beach. And, like we said, getting the two to agree was surprisingly tough. In fact, the only thing they agreed on was that they'd pick a beach over a lake any day, which is pretty amusing considering they've long-lived in the landlocked Sioux Falls.

That said, based on what we've seen of their home from other HGTV videos, we know that the twosome has found a way to make it work. And, luckily for fans who love the couple's aesthetic, the areas where they have compromised are easy to replicate (and in some cases, the alternatives they've gone for may even make for a more cost-effective copy).

The DeBoers have gone with paint over wallpaper

Asked by HGTV if they preferred paint or wallpaper, Cole DeBoer noted that he was super comfortable installing wallpaper, making it his top pick. His wife, on the other hand, revealed that she was more partial to paint, at least for the time being. Seems Chelsea DeBoer got the last say on this particular design element, as in a tour of their home for HGTV's YouTube channel, their home's interior was painted all the way.

The video of the home seemed to show that the DeBoers had settled on an almost creamy shade, so there's a possibility it's actually Sherwin Williams' Alabaster, which the brand describes as a "soft, warm but balanced white." Chelsea has previously gushed over the shade, telling Homes & Gardens of the hue, "It's the perfect white, and it looks great in all spaces." She also stressed that it brought a cozy feel to any room — and based on what we've seen of her own home, that's certainly the case. At the time of writing, you can get a sample of Alabaster from Sherwin-Williams' website for around $11.

If you're still debating whether paint or wallpaper are best for your rooms but are desperate for a Chelsea-approved decision, don't fret. The couple has also collaborated with Wall Blush in the past, so you can rest assured knowing that a pick from the site would get a thumbs-up (plus, wallpaper-loving Cole would probably be thrilled).

The DeBoers have hardwood (or hardwood-inspired) floors

Another area of home design the DeBoers seem to have found a compromise on is their flooring. Though Chelsea DeBoer told HGTV that her current first choice would be tiles, Cole DeBoer wasted no time saying he was a fan of hardwood. Based on the 2023 tour of their home, it seems Cole emerged the victor. Having said that, there's also a possibility that, as the parents of four kids, they went with the more durable lookalike alternatives. Those would be luxury vinyl plank or engineered hardwood.

If you're interested in trying out either alternative to traditional hardwood, it's worth noting that our flooring expert says luxury vinyl plank is generally a better investment than engineered hardwood. That said, engineered hardwood does come with the major benefit of easy installation — plus, it's a lot cheaper than the real deal, if that's your only other alternative. If you're conflicted, it's never a bad idea to reach out to a local supplier for advice tailored to your home and budget.

Like most couples, the DeBoers have had to find a middle ground on the design elements in their home. Even with the compromises, though, there's no doubt that they've created something perfect for them — and it doesn't hurt that it's easy enough for fans to replicate.
