Decluttering Coffee Mugs: How Many Is Too Many?

Even if you're an avid coffee drinker, chances are you probably have just one or two favorite mugs that you always go back to time and time again. However, you probably have plenty of extras around, too. While there are many DIY pantry ideas to expand kitchen storage, decluttering coffee mugs is one of the most effective things you can do to create more room in your kitchen cabinets. To declutter coffee mugs, you should ensure you're only keeping enough around to meet your needs. To do this, determine how many mugs each person in your home uses each day and consider how often you clean them. Multiplying these numbers will give you the number of mugs you should keep after decluttering.

There are many benefits to reducing the number of mugs you own. Decluttering coffee mugs can increase storage space, thereby making room for other important dishes in your cabinets. It can also reduce stress, helping you breathe easier at home. It can be tough to get rid of mugs, especially if you've collected a lot over the years. You may feel sentimental about certain mugs that you bought on vacation or that were given to you by somebody special. Despite this, it's a good idea to put in the hard work to declutter so that you can keep your cabinets clean and organized. You might also want to try some clever in-cabinet storage hacks such as using shelf risers or strategic stacking methods.

How to declutter your coffee mugs

While there aren't any hard and fast rules regarding how many coffee mugs you should own, you probably need fewer than you think. At minimum, you most likely need at least two: one to drink from while the other is dirty. However, this should go for each person who drinks coffee in your home, and you might want to have some extra coffee mugs around for guests to use as well.

To determine how many you need, multiply the number of coffee drinkers in your home by how many coffee mugs each of them uses per day. Then, multiply that number by the number of days it typically takes you to wash them. For example, if you use one coffee mug every day and wash your dishes every two days, you'll only need to have two coffee mugs around. However, if both you and your partner use two fresh mugs every day and you wash your dishes every three days, you'll need twelve mugs total. Finally, add on any extras for guests.

There are many ways to decide which mugs to get rid of. First, remove mugs that are stained or chipped. You may also want to determine which are your favorites and then remove those that don't make the cut. Also remember that you can repurpose some of your mugs, if desired. Consider turning a mug into a pen or toothbrush holder or find other ways to repurpose old coffee mugs around the house.
