Fixer Upper's Joanna Gaines Shares A Stunning Way To Make An Upstairs Loft More Private

Having that extra bit of space in an upstairs loft gives homeowners the chance to make their homes feel more warm and cozy for reading, studying, or relaxing. However, this space often lacks privacy from those who are hanging out downstairs. Luckily, HGTV's Joanna Gaines, co-host of "Fixer Upper," has introduced a solution. After an impressive lake house renovation, Gaines posted a video on Instagram to go over a detail that was skipped during the reveal: custom wood screens (via Instagram). "I love these screens, how simple they are — but, detailed, very detailed," she said in the video, adding " ... I love this little landing, I think it turned out so good."

The wood screens were created in a tight grid pattern and hung vertically from the floor to the ceiling (with small gaps between both surfaces). In this space, designed with a lichen green sofa, two wooden side tables, and a red Moroccan rug, the screens replaced the dated pony wall and introduced a new sense of interest and texture. If you'd like to get the look, there are a few ways to go about it.

How to get the look

If you like the custom wood panel look, you'll have to pay the cost to hire a carpenter to build it for you. Minus the cost of materials, a carpenter is likely to request $75 to $125 per hour, depending on their skill level and what they're creating. For the cost of materials, you'll likely be paying $2 to $9 per square foot.

If you'd like to avoid those costs, you can purchase something pre-made, like the Poul 72-inch-by-72-inch Solid Wood Single Panel Room Divider from All Modern for $380. The dark wood color and grid pattern is similar to what Joanna Gaines revealed at her lake house renovation, and is sure to add a touch of privacy to your loft area. Those who prefer something even more affordable may enjoy a foldable room divider instead, like the HomCom Six Panel Folding Privacy Screen from Amazon that's about 67 inches tall and 94 inches wide. It costs about $95 and features a woven design perfect for complementing bohemian decor. If you're DIY-minded, you can also build your own screens by creating a room divider with IKEA outdoor deck tiles and mounting it between the floor and ceiling
