Don't Toss Your Old CDs, DIY Stunning Suncatchers Instead
Just because we're living in the digital age doesn't mean CDs have lost their value. In fact, there are plenty of ways to repurpose old CDs around the home. According to a genius hack by Instagrammer @angelsign_, you can turn your old CD collection into a stunning DIY suncatcher. Yes, this hack requires a bit of patience and some creativity, but you can transform these discs into a bespoke item for your house that will brighten any space. In addition to old CDs, you'll also need scissors, an X-ACTO knife, fishing wire, and a hot glue gun.
The goal is to remove your CD's plastic protective layer, revealing the shimmering mirror band beneath. From there, you'll want to cut this layer into geometric pieces, folding these layers into cubes, and gluing them onto fishing wire. If you want a little extra bling, you can up the ante and swap out the wire for faux crystal beads from Amazon for $12. If you don't have any old CDs, consider visiting a used record store, a flea market, or a thrift store. You'll also need an X-ACTO knife, available on Amazon for under $10. If you have small children and pets, keep the small CD pieces and sharp instruments used for creating this project out of reach. Additionally, don't display this suncatcher outdoors — tiny items such as beads can harm local wildlife, especially birds. If ingested, these plastic pieces can cause dangerous obstructions and more.
Start creating your suncatcher
To remove your CD's protective plastic layer, gently separate it from its mirror band with an X-ACTO knife. Be careful not to break this piece of plastic — you'll need it later. To avoid injury, use cut-resistant gloves, available on Amazon for $10. Once removed, use a geometric pattern as a stencil for your CD's mirror band to create the 3D shape of your choice. These could be cubes, diamonds, and more. Once traced, cut it out and use your X-ACTO knife to trace over each line. Be careful to only cut the top layer of your mirror band, as you'll need everything attached when you assemble your 3D object.
Next, use hot glue to secure each side of your 3D object. Once complete, repeat this until you have as many cubes or diamonds as you'd like to attach to your fishing wire. You can even cut out a few flat pieces of mirror band to add dimension to your project or add rhinestones for even more shine. Grab your scissors and cut your top piece of plastic into a spiral, suspending your fishing wire and 3D shapes. If you have old strands of beads, feel free to add them, making your suncatcher even more glamorous. Consider using strips of ribbon, gluing them to your plastic spiral for pops of color. Love the results? If yes, you'll be happy to know there are several ways to decorate with CDs, like creating a stunning DIY birdbath.
