Spruce Up Your Old Cabinets By Revamping Them Into An Office Nook

Nothing says productivity like those big, beautiful home offices you see in magazines and all over social media. However, these sprawling, perfectly organized, and gorgeously designed spaces are not necessarily a reality for every homeowner, since so many people lack the requisite space for a large office. Fortunately, just because you don't have a spare bedroom to devote to creating a stunning and functional home office doesn't mean you can't have one.

We all know that putting your home office directly in your bedroom is a bad idea, but why not follow the lead of content creator Lone Fox, who transformed an unused bedroom-adjacent passthrough closet full of storage cabinets into his new dedicated home office. By simply removing one side of cabinets and installing a floating desk with shelves, he beautified a neglected nook in his home, making it a space where he actually wanted to spend time. While your home setup may be a little different, take a closer look around the place for an underutilized nook, and you may be able to repurpose it into the mini office of your dreams.

Creating your mini office in an unused closet nook

The basic steps from Lone Fox's YouTube tutorial can easily be used to DIY a similar mini office setup in any nook in your home. He began by removing the floor-to-ceiling cabinets on one side of the hallway. He then installed a floating desk that was supported by all three walls of the nook and used wood flooring planks on both the walls and surrounding the desk substrate to create a high-end wood paneling effect. He finished off the space with custom stained trim, as well as floating shelves above the desk made out of the flooring material to maximize space in his new office. He then styled the space with a wallpapered ceiling, a 1940s chandelier, comfortable chair, books, art, and curated accessories.

If you are doing a DIY like this at home, your desk setup may look a little different, depending on the configuration of your nook. If you are unable to float the desk, consider placing a desktop on a freestanding drawer unit for support and extra storage on one or both sides instead. Likewise, if the wood panel look isn't for you since nooks like this are so small, you can really have some fun being creative with them, so try using a great wallpaper or even paint a mural that makes you feel happy, inspired, and productive every time you look at it. Then, accessorize your space with things that bring you joy to create a productive, personalized, and completely transformed office nook you will love to use.
